Panthers take first at Riverside Invitational

OAKLAND – In a stacked field of 21 teams, Creston wrestling took first at the Riverside Invitational on Saturday.

The Panthers finished with 204 points which paced them over podium finishers West Sioux (183.5) and Logan-Magnolia (179.5).

The West Sioux Falcons opened the season No. 2 in 1A with six ranked wrestlers and Lo-Ma opened the season ranked No. 5 in 1A, also with six ranked wrestlers.

“It’s a balanced attack, that’s what you get with us right now,” Creston wrestling coach Cody Downing said. “We throw 14 weights at you and we got someone that can fight and battle at every weight class.”

Justin Parsons (106) and Christian Ahrens (113) finished as runner ups in their respective weight classes.

“Justin is a senior at 106 and is going to be tough to beat for anybody,” Downing said. “Christian, who was JV most of the year last year, had some good varsity wins last year and now he’s getting his shot at 113, I feel like he’s getting better every time out.”

Trey Chestnut (132), Austin Evans (138), Kaden Street (170) and Max Chapman (195) each had a third place finish at the invitational.

Jagger Luther (195) and Chris Wilson (285) placed fifth and Ty Morrison (182) brought home a sixth place finish.

“Getting all of those guys in that top five, top six, is what won the tournament for us,” Downing said.

UP NEXT – Creston will next be in action for a home quad tonight. The Panthers will face West Central Valley, Treynor and Glenwood starting at 5 p.m.
