SWCC upsets No. 11 Kirkwood CC

CRESTON – With a 57-50 victory on Saturday over Kirkwood, the Southwestern men’s basketball team was in control from start to finish.

“I thought our guys were tough and they stepped up to the challenge,” Southwestern head coach Reggie Kindle said. “I know teams are going to come in here and overlook us because we’re small and we may not look the part but we compete and we play hard.”

Duke Carey, who had one point in SWCC’s 83-62 win against Kirkwood the last time these two teams played, had a career high 30 points in the win.

“I’m pretty happy for Duke Carey, guy has been through a lot and he’s been fighting through adversity,” Kindle said.

Brance Baker of Creston was in the starting lineup and finished with 4-of-4 shooting from deep. AJ Lacabe tallied seven points, Carson Busch contributed four points and Jamel Hollins had two points.

Southwestern (5-8) led 27-23 at halftime and expanded their lead to 52-36 with 7:43 remaining.

Over the next 5:40 of game time, Kirkwood went on a furious 14-2 run.

Eagle Cassius Brooks missed two free throws which would’ve made the game a one possession game.

Duke Carey finished the game how he played the entirety of it, with a deep 3-point basket.

Southwestern next plays at the Northeast Community College (Neb.) Hawks on Dec. 15 and on Dec. 18 the Spartans face off against Highland Community College - Kansas.

“I would love to have the community come out and support, I know our record isn’t what it should be but I promise you won’t be disappointed coming and watching us play,” Kindle said.
