Spartan basketball teams split doubleheader

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Southwestern Community College visited the Metropolitan Community College Wolves on Saturday for the seventh game of their respective seasons.

Four Spartans finished with double digits, and the Spartans cruised to a 52-28 halftime lead en route to an 84-72 victory (5-2).

Hannah Smith had 19 points to lead the scoring effort for SWCC. Kaylynn Tucker had 16 and both Alyssa Morris and Natalia Bochenek had 15 points.

Metropolitan Community College out rebounded the Spartans 50-40.

Morris and Bochenek led the Spartans with nine boards each.

SWCC went 50% in 3-point shooting and 45.2% overall. The Wolves were held to 21.7% and 32.1% in respective categories.

Mackenzi Callaway led the Wolves scoring effort with 33 points.

The Spartans (2-5) fell 70-65 in the men’s game.

Devin Tomlinson had 23 points in the loss and both Duke Carey as well as Carson Busch each added 15 to the Spartan total.

Both teams were tied at 31 at halftime.

Duke Carey led the Spartans with rebounds, six, and assists with five.

SWCC shot 47.3% from the field and 44% beyond the arc in the loss. Metropolitan CC shot 54.7% from the field and 35.3% from 3-point land.

Spartans men’s basketball heads to West Plains, Mo., for two games in the West Plains Classic. SWCC will play West Texas College Friday at 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday against National Park College (Ark.)

The next Southwestern women’s basketball game is on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Spartans host North Platte Community College (Neb.)
