Area tracksters lace up this afternoon for state qualifying meets

Track and field squads across Iowa will embark on state qualifying meets at various sites this afternoon.

From the Creston News Advertiser coverage area, Creston and Clarke will compete in a Class 3A meet at Glenwood with the top two finishers in each event and the next 10 efforts from the state qualifying for the state track meet.

Nodaway Valley and Orient-Macksburg will compete with Alta-Aurelia, Audubon, CAM, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Earlham, Exira-EHK, Glidden-Ralston, Griswold, IKM-Manning, Newell-Fonda, Storm Lake St. Mary’s and Stanton in a Class 1A meet at Audubon. Winners and the next 14 efforts from the state qualify for state.

Also in Class 1A, six area teams will compete in a meet at Mount Ayr. Those teams include Diagonal, East Union, Lenox, Mount Ayr, Murray and Southwest Valley.

Glenwood meet

Clarke sophomore Josey Dunbar leads 100-meter dash times (12.78 seconds) coming into the state qualifying meet at Glenwood and is second in the 200 (26.84). Also for the Lady Indians, Ali and Tory Henry (16.77 and 16.88) hold the third and fourth fastest 100-meter hurdle times, respectively.

In the throws, Creston senior Kelsey Fields leads the field entering the meet in the shot put (43 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and discus (136 feet, 8 inches).

Clarke brings the third-fastest 4x100 time (52.02) into the Glenwood meet. Creston is the fourth-fastest 4x800 quartet (10:49.74) and Clarke is fifth (12:00.93). Creston’s distance medley is fifth-fastest of teams entered (4:37.61) and Clarke’s shuttle hurdle is fourth-fastest (1:14.84).

On the boys’ side, Creston freshman Brandon Briley is the fourth-fastest 800 runner (2:08.63). In the 400-meter hurdles, Clarke senior Tanner Fry is fourth-best coming into the meet (59.71). In the high jump, Clarke freshman Jesus Vega is tied for second-best, at 5 feet, 10 inches. Clarke’s boys excel in the throws, with Dalton Stubbe fourth-best in shot put (49 feet, 3 inches) and fifth-best in discus (136 feet). Spruceton Buddenhagen is fourth-best in the discus at 136 feet, 11 inches.

Mount Ayr meet

In the Mount Ayr meet, Raiderette junior Adalyn Reynolds is fastest coming in for the 100 (12.9), 200 (26.58) and 400 (1:00.24). Murray’s Leksi Gannon is third-fastest in the 100-meter dash (13.37).

Lenox’s McKinna Hogan is first in the 800 (2:35.49) and Karly Elwood of Mount Ayr second (2:36.35). In the 1,500, Hogan leads with a 5:28.59 and Jones is second (5:33.72). Jones leads the 3,000 runners (12:20.55) and Hogan is second (12:42.90) with Karlie Larsen of Mount Ayr third (12:46.54).

In the hurdles, Lenox’s Cassidy Nelson is fastest entering the Mount Ayr meet with a 16.86 and East Union’s Grace Nixon is second-best with 17.87. TJ Stoaks of Lenox leads in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.91) and Mount Ayr’s Payten Lambert (1:13.10) is second.

In the high jump, Lenox’s Cadence Douglas is first at 5 feet, 2 inches.

In relays, Mount Ayr (53.54) leads in the 4x100 with East Union (54.89) second. Mount Ayr is second in the 4x200 (1:56.25) and Murray third (1:57.36). In the 4x400-meter relay, Mount Ayr is second (4:24) and Southwest Valley third (4:41). Mount Ayr (10:47.06), Lenox (10:49.77) and Southwest Valley (10:50.67) are first, second and third, respectively, in teh 4x800. Mount Ayr leads the sprint medley (1:56.39), Lenox is third (2:03.09) and East Union fourth (2:04.14). The distance medley is led by Lenox (4:38.14) with Southwest Valley second (4:54.29). The shuttle hurdle is led by Mount Ayr (1:16.68).

On the boys’ side, East Union’s Caleb Comstock is second in both the 100 (11.47) and 200 (23.36). Mount Ayr’s Ryce Reynolds is second in the 400 (51.12) and first in the 800 (2:01.86). Also in the 800, Mount Ayr’s Adler Shay (2:03.19), Trae Ehlen (2:04.30) and Bryce Shaha (2:07.48) are second, third and fourth, respectively.

In distance races, Shaha leads the 1,600-meter run (5:00.72) with East Union’s Jacob Driskill second (5:14.61) and Murray’s Christian Nevarez (5:16.77) third. Driskill is second in the 3,200 (11:14.01).

In the hurdles, Lenox’s Johnathan Weaver leads the field in the 110-meter hurdles (15.66) and EU’s Brody Kinyon is second (16.09). Briar Knapp of Mount Ayr leads the pack in the 400-meter hurdles (58.89).

Isaac Grundman (19 feet, 7 1/2 inches) and Brad Larson (19 feet, 7 1/4 inches) of Lenox are first and second, respectively, in the long jump with Scott Driskill of East Union third (19 feet, 6 1/2 inches). Southwest Valley’s Marshall Knapp is currently tied for first in the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches. Murray’s Brycen Wookey leads shot put at 45 feet, 1/2 inch. Devin Whipple (132 feet, 8 inches) and Hernan Castor (128 feet, 9 inches), both of Lenox, lead the discus.

East Union’s 4x100 (46.21) leads that event with Lenox (46.39) and Mount Ayr (46.91) close behind. East Union’s 4x200 is second in the district (1:36.23). Mount Ayr leads in the 4x400 (3:31.98), 4x800 (8:31.75) and distance medley (3:50.38). The shuttle hurdle from Lenox leads that event (1:05.61).

Audubon meet

Nodaway Valley’s girls are led by a host of high-ranking events. Maddax DeVault is second in the 100-meter dash entering the meet (13.13) and first in the 200 (26.59), 400 (1:02.98) and 100-meter hurdles (15.77). Madison Fry leads the long jumpers going into the meet (16 feet, 9 1/2 inches). The Wolverines are first in the 4x100 (51.15), 4x200 (1:50.86), sprint medley (1:54.49) and shuttle hurdle (1:09.32) and second in the 4x400 (4:21.54).

Orient-Macksburg sophomore Tyson Ross enters a thick field of good high jumpers, sitting tied for third in the qualifying meet, with a personal best of 5 feet, 10 inches.
