Doubles sweep lifts Panthers over Boone

A sweep of the doubles matches proved to be decisive as the Creston/O-M girls defeated Boone, 6-3, as five Panther seniors were honored with their parents prior to the meet.

The teams were deadlocked 3-3 after singles play. Then the Panther duos of Morgan Driskell and Sam Dunphy, Maddie Frey and Karly Calvin, and Halle Evans and Caitlin Bruce were each victorious to secure the team victory.

“It was great to get a win tonight against Boone,” Creston/O-M coach Kevin Cooper said. “They are always a good program and have a lot of kids out. We played really well tonight and hopefully we can use that a building block for the postseason.”

The veteran Panther coach was impressed with how his team responded to the challenge in doubles play after Boone had secured three singles victories, including an 8-2 triumph by Kinsie Zinnel over Hawkeye Ten champion Maddie Frey at No. 1 singles.

“The difference in the night was the way we played in doubles,” Cooper said. “We took control of all three matches right away and never looked back.”

Seniors honored Tuesday were Frey, Calvin, Dunphy, Jess Eblen and Haylee Meyer.

Next action for Creston/O-M tennis is boys district play today at Red Oak before girls team regional play on Saturday.
