LEON — Wayne was crowned winner of the Pride of Iowa Conference in girls track and field with 165.5 points in a conference meet held Monday night at Central Decatur High School.
In second place, Mount Ayr scored 140.5 points, Nodaway Valley was third (105), Central Decatur fourth (82) and Lenox fifth (69). Martensdale-St. Marys (64) was in sixth, Southwest Valley seventh (33), East Union and Bedford tied in eighth with 31 and Southeast Warren was 10th with nine.
Mount Ayr wins four events
With four event wins, Mount Ayr coach Brad Elliot was pleased with how his girls team performed.
“Wayne just has a pretty deep team this year. We just couldn’t keep up with their scoring,” Elliott said.
Raiderette sprinter Adalyn Reynolds helped her team by scoring 30 points, with wins in the 100-meter dash (12.90), 200-meter dash (26.63) and 400 (1:01.73). Makayla Jones also won the 3,000-meter run in 12:25.38.
Mount Ayr’s second place finishers were Karly Elwood in the 800-meter run (2:38.81), the sprint medley (1:58.11) and 4x400 (4:40.39).
Third place for the Raiderettes were Payten Lambert in the 100 (13.39 seconds) and the 4x100 team in 1:20:13.
“The 1-2 punch in the sprint events with Ady Reynolds and Payten Lambert was good for us,” Elliott said. “Ady’s had a really good season for us so far. The big surprise was Karlie running a 2:38 in the 800. Senior leadership out of Makayla Jones was outstanding tonight. We have a thing at Mount Ayr called the ‘Iron Woman.’ That’s running in the 3,000, the 1,500, the 800 leg of our medley, and she ran the 4x400, so she went as far as you can run in a track meet tonight. We’re really excited for her committing to that.”
Fourth place was Makayla Jones in the 1,500-meter run (5:46.26), Karlie Larsen in the 3,000-meter run (13:10.16), Lambert in the long jump (15 feet, 4 1/4 inches), Zoey Larsen in the shot put (29 feet, 9 1/2 inches), the 4x200 (2:02.82) and the distance medley (5:01.41).

NV head coach Brett Welsch said his team is battling a few nagging injuries at this point in the season, but their focus is to run with who they have going forward.
“Because of the injuries to some of the runners, I don’t have the depth I’d like at this point in the season,” Welsch said. “I think cutting the season by two weeks was tough on our freshmen, and we really have two sets of freshmen. Overall, I was happy with the times, we just don’t have enough bodies because of some of these nagging injuries preventing us from filling a full list of events.”
