Nine area girls honored for Bluegrass all-conference basketball

Nine area basketball players have been selected for the 2021 Bluegrass all-conference girls basketball team.

Two, notably, have been tabbed for a first-team caliber season. Kinzee Eggers of Murray and Taylor Lumbard of Diagonal were selected to the first team by the Bluegrass Conference.

Eggers, a senior, was the leader for the Mustangs on the floor. Her 210 points were a team-high total (ninth in the Bluegrass), and her 44.3% from the floor also led the team.

She grabbed 65 rebounds, 17 steals and assisted on 20 scores. She had 19 blocks (fifth in the Bluegrass).

Lumbard, on a team of six, led the Maroonettes with 249 rebounds (second in the Bluegrass). She also led in scoring with 255 points (sixth in the Bluegrass) on 46.4% shooting.

She had 34 assists and 31 steals to go with four blocks.

Second team

On the second team, Murray’s Jayda Chew and Teryn Shields were selected.

Chew’s season saw her put up 157 points on 32.6% shooting with 69 rebounds and a team-high 68 steals.

Shields scored 143 points on 32.3% shooting from the field. She had 53 assists (ninth in the Bluegrass), 61 rebounds and 42 steals (second in the Bluegrass) and 13 blocks.

Diagonal put its second player onto an all-conference team with Anna Newton selected to the second team.

Newton was integral to the Maroonettes’ short bench, scoring 194 points with 117 rebounds in 22 games played. She also had 38 assists and 26 steals.

Orient-Macksburg’s Caitlyn Gist was selected for the second team.

Gist played in all 20 games this season for the Bulldogs, ending as the leading scorer for them with 222 points (eighth in the Bluegrass). She was 30.9% from the field.

She also led in rebounds for O-M, grabbing 177 (fourth in the Bluegrass), while also finishing tied for second in assists (25) and third in steals (33).

Honorable mention

Murray’s Megan Keller was an honorable mention for the Bluegrass Conference this season.

Keller, a senior, finished her high school basketball career with 113 points on 42.4% shooting. She had a team-high 114 rebounds with 25 assists and 35 steals this season. She also was second on the team in blocks with 16, trailing Eggers.

Alaina Whittington was an honorable mention for Diagonal.

The third sophomore selected for Diagonal, she scored 196 points on 31.1% shooting from the field. She had 122 rebounds, 27 assists and 23 steals for the Maroonettes.

Christa Cass was the second selection from Orient-Macksburg to crack the all-conference team, getting picked as an honorable mention.

Cass played in 19 games, scoring 166 points with 100 rebonds. She led the club in steals with 36 and had 23 assists. She was also second on the club in blocks, trailing Gist with 14.
