Southwestern volleyball roundup: Young Spartan volleyball team breaks skid with first win

Southwestern 3, Marshalltown 2

MARSHALLTOWN – Southwestern (2-10) won its second match of the season and first on the road with a 3-2 win over Marshalltown (0-4) Sunday.

The Spartans won the first and third sets 25-18 and 25-22, respectively. Marshalltown took the second and third sets 25-14 and 25-15, respectively, to force a fifth set. Southwestern edged out a 15-10 third-set victory to take the match.

Lauren Krenning and Creston alumna MaKenna Hudson combined for 50 digs, recording 28 and 22, respectively. Florence Omodayo led the team with 15 kills.

Indian Hills 3, Southwestern 0

OTTUMA – Southwestern fell 3-0 to Indian Hills (7-5) Friday to mark its 10th loss on the year.

Indian Hills dominated all three sets, winning the first and third sets 25-12 and the second set 25-7.

Krenning recorded 15 digs to lead the team, and Hudson’s 10 assists also led the team.

Southwestern 3, Southeastern 0

Southwestern picked up its first win of the season with a three-set victory over Southeastern (5-8) Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Southeastern kept the contest close, pushing the Spartans, but Southwestern took all three sets 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21.

Southwestern recorded 36 kills, with Omadayo’s 15 leading the group. Four Spartans recorded 15 or more digs as the group racked up 71 total digs.

Kirkwood 3, Southwestern 0

Southwestern fell 3-0 to Kirkwood (10-2) for its ninth consecutive loss Sunday, Feb. 21 after the Jan. 31 contest was cancelled.

The Spartans kept things close in the first set, falling 25-18, but Kirkwood rolled to 25-18 and 25-13 wins in the second and third set, respectively.

Southwestern stats were unavailable at time of press.

Northeast 3, Southwestern 0

CALMAR – Southwestern held close through the first of three sets in a 3-0 loss to Northeast (3-11) Thursday, Feb. 18.

A 25-19 loss in the first set was the closest the Spartans held in the three sets. Northeast took the second set 25-15 and 25-17.

On the night, Southwestern finished 21-for-91 on total attack attempts for a -.011 kill percentage. Deniz Tuncer led the group with 23 digs. Hudson recorded a team-high 15 assists.

Hawkeye 3, Southwestern 0

Southwestern dropped three sets to Hawkeye Community College (10-3) Sunday, Feb. 14.

The Spartans rallied for a 25-23 third set, the closest in the match. But, Hawkeye’s 25-14 first set and 25-12 second set wins put a match win out of reach for Southwestern.

Of 20 team assists, Hudson led the way with 14. Karisa Nietzer, Allison Lillis and Omodayo each recorded five kills for a team-high.

Iowa Central 3, Southwestern 0

FORT DODGE – Iowa Central (12-2) rolled through Southwestern 3-0 Thursday, Feb. 11.

Southwestern trailed 2-0 after falling 25-11 and 25-6, respectively, but the Spartans rallied in the third set. SWCC came up just short in a 25-21 third-set loss.

The Spartans finished with 19 kills and 21 errors on 80 total attack attempts.

Ellsworth 3, Southwestern 1

IOWA FALLS – Southwestern stole one set against Ellsworth (3-10) in a 3-1 loss Sunday, Feb. 7.

SWCC’s set victory came in the second with a 25-17 win. Ellsworth won the first set 25-15, second set 25-14 and third set 25-21.

The Spartans tallied 103 digs, with six players in double digits. Southwestern also recorded 35 kills, a season high.

Des Moines Area 3, Southwestern 0

Des Moines Area (10-4) blew through Southwestern for a 3-0 win Thursday, Feb. 4.

The Bears won 25-16, 25-14 and 25-6 in three sets.

Kennedy Jordon and Hudson both recorded seven assists for a team-high.
