Southwestern baseball roundup: Spartans slow out of the gate in first two road series

Fort Scott 10, Southwestern 4 (7)

FORT SCOTT, Kan. – Fort Scott topped Southwestern Saturday 10-4 , capping off a road series for the Spartans where they 1-3.

Due to a Saturday doubleheader, the game went seven innings. Elija Foresman went 3 2/3 of the way allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts. He allowed one homer.

Tye Falker (one inning, three earned runs), Jacob Ciafullo (1/3 inning, two earned runs) and Josiah Young (one inning, one earned run) all came on in relief.

The Spartans briefly held the lead at 3-0 entering the bottom of the second, but Fort Scott was able to pick up one run to cut the difference down to two. Fort Scott took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, going up 4-3, rounding out the game in the fifth and sixth innings with three runs in each inning to run 10-4.

Both sides had nine hits. Ernies Lozada, Colby Page, Carlos Muniz and William Pagan each had two hits. The Spartans had no RBIs.

Southwestern 11, Fort Scott 1 (6)

FORT SCOTT, Kan. – Southwestern broke a six-game losing skid Saturday getting a win in Game 1 its doubleheader against Fort Scott.

The Spartans fell behind through the first inning 1-0 before scoring two runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 advantage into the top of the sixth.

A five-run top half of the inning put Fort Scott on its heels in the bottom half, going down quietly to succumb to the run-rule loss.

Southwestern’s Noah Carpenter went five strong innings, striking out seven in the win. He allowed three hits. Eric Desbois came on in the sixth, locking up the game with one inning of work.

Robert Aquino went yard, finishing the day 3-for-3 with six RBIs and a walk. Julio Goncalves, Aquino and Trey Rodriguez each had doubles in the win as well.

The Spartans finished with 10 hits, 10 RBIs and four walks as a team.

Fort Scott 19, Southwestern 7 (5)

FORT SCOTT, Kan. – Fort Scott run-ruled Southwestern in the second half of a doubleheader Friday, winning 19-7.

The Spartans got on the board first, but surrendered four runs through the first inning. Before they knew it, the Spartans were chasing a 14-2 deficit through two innings of play.

SWCC scored four runs in the top of the fifth to try and keep the game going, but fell short of getting under the run-rule difference.

Seven hits came from Southwestern with two coming from Lozada and Will Courtney. Lozada scored twice and drew a walk and Courtney drove in two runs.

Page and Muniz each drove in two runs as well. Goncalves hit a solo homer for his only hit of the day.

Blake Murray was saddled with the loss, going just 1 1/3 innings pitched with eight earned runs.

Fort Scott 6, Southwestern 0 (7)

FORT SCOTT, Kan. – Fort Scott blanked Southwestern in the first game of its four-game series last weekend, winning Friday’s opener in a 6-0 final.

Fort Scott got all it needed in the first inning, going ahead 1-0 after one. Three more runs in the third and two in the fourth extended the lead as SWCC only put together four hits.

Aquino, Lozada, Muniz and Courtney were the lone Spartans to register a hit. Lozada and Page each walked twice.

Alex Amaral pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs. He also struck out six of the 15 batters he faced.

Kelvin Roman came on in relief and struck out six of the 11 batters he faced, allowing two runs (none earned) off one hit.

Johnson County 11, Southwestern 1 (7)

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Southwestern dropped the last of its four-game swing against Johnson County 11-1 Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Johnson County consistently put numbers up, scoring at least one run from the first inning to the seventh. The Cavaliers had one outlier in their linescore, which was a five-run spot in the sixth inning.

SWCC’s lone run came in the fourth inning by way of Colby Page. A hit from him, Daniel Thiessen, Murray, Goncalves and Giancarlos Figueroa was all the offense put together.

Elijah Foresman pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four earned with two strikeouts. The Spartan staff as a whole struck out four batters while walking four.

Johnson County 10, Southwestern 1 (7)

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Southwestern lost to Johnson County Tuesday 10-1, falling to the Cavaliers for the third time in their season-opening road trip.

The Cavs got three runs in the first inning, later extending a 3-1 lead in the fourth with two runs, fifth with one run and sixth with four runs. The Spartans had multi-hit games from Muniz and Goncalves, each smacking two hits.

Aquino and Muniz roped doubles and Goncalves stole a base.

Noah Carpenter was handed the loss. He pitched four innings, allowing five runs, hits and walks. He also had five strikeouts.

Johnson County 17, Southwestern 7 (7)

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County outscored its hits total Monday night (Jan. 22), winning 17-7 over Southwestern with just 14 hits.

The Cavs’ Jake Grauberger scored three times, knocking two homers to drive in five RBIs. SWCC was led by Muniz and Theissen, both scoring twice and racking up two hits. Theissen went yard, capping off a 2-for-3 day with three RBIs.

Trey Rodriguez had two RBIs in a 1-for-3 day.

The Spartan pitching staff struck out five, walked 10 and allowed five homers.

Johnson County 12, Southwestern 1 (6)

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Southwestern dropped its season opener Monday, Jan. 22, falling to Johnson County 12-1.

A five-run second inning stunned Southwestern, who had no answers in a three hit day to open 2021.

Lozada scored the lone run, which came by way of a solo homer. He, Aquino and Muniz all cracked the hit department.

Alexa Amaral pitched three innings, striking out three. He allowed seven runs, was handed the losing decision and allowed two homers.

Tyler Farmer pitched the back half of the game, going three frames. He stuck out two, walked two and allowed five runs.
