Area boys basketball roundup: Murray wins two, SWV and Lenox battle over the weekend

Melcher-Dallas 60, Orient-Macksburg 29

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg (1-16) fell to Melcher-Dallas (8-8) Monday night, 60-29.

O-M trailed 20-7 through the first quarter, leading to a 44-15 halftime score. Melcher-Dallas continued to pull away in the second half.

Tyson Ross led in scoring with nine points.

Mount Ayr 75, Interstate 35 47

TRURO – Mount Ayr (15-4) rolled past Interstate 35 (5-11) Monday night, cruising to a 75-47 victory.

Jaixen Frost led with 24 points, 14 coming in the second half. Cody Larson had 12 points.

Red Oak 70, Southwest Valley 37

RED OAK – Red Oak (9-9) thumped Southwest Valley (6-13), beating the Timberwolves 70-37 Monday night.

Stats were unavailable from both teams.

Murray 49, Lamoni 41

MURRAY – Murray (12-5) won in a makeup game over Lamoni (11-5) Saturday, winning 49-41.

Murray held a one-point advantage through the first quarter and turned it into an 11-point lead at the break. Lamoni cut the margin to four entering the fourth, but the Mustangs held off the Demons for a win.

“This was a good game for us defensively,” said Murray head coach Darin Wookey. “Lamoni was without (Hayden Stewart) which slowed them down offensively. Colton Siefkas had a great game tonight. ... Zach Belden hit some big free throws down the stretch to seal the win.”

Siefkas scored a team-high 22 points, grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Lenox 53, Southwest Valley 48

LENOX – Lenox (10-8) came out on top against Southwest Valley 53-48 Saturday.

Southwest Valley had a six-point lead entering halftime and saw it slowly sink away, leading to Lenox doubling up on points in the fourth 14-7 to take the lead late.

Lenox was led with three players scoring 11 points each – Samson Adams, Walon Cook and Keaton England. Adams led the team in rebounds with nine and England tied Adams for the high in assists with four.

Southwest Valley stats were unavailable.

Murray 84, Moulton-Udell 27

MOULTON – Murray beat Moulton-Udell (0-18) in a non-conference tilt Friday night, winning big over the Eagles 84-27.

A 23-3 first quarter set the tone for the Mustangs, who had little push back from the Eagles in the game. Murray outscored Moulton-Udell 27-0 in the fourth quarter.

“Brycen Wookey and Gauge Mongar both played really well (Friday),” said Darin Wookey. “We were able to get all 13 kids into the game for four quarters. It’s always fun when you play well and get everyone in. We shot the ball really well tonight and dished out 20 assists.”

Brycen Wookey led in scoring with 20 points. Mongar scored 11 and Jace Rodecker had 10 points. Murray had 38 rebounds, 20 assists and 21 steals in the blowout win.

Nodaway Valley 53, Lenox 38

LENOX – Nodaway Valley (12-8) beat Lenox Friday night, besting the Tigers 53-38.

The Wolverines led by 11 at the break at 30-19 and outscored Lenox for the remainder of the contest. Both sides struggled in the fourth, scoring a combined 11 points, but Lenox couldn’t take advantage of NV’s struggles from the field.

Bower led in scoring with 22 points. Phillippi dropped 21 in the win as well. Bower also had a team-high 11 rebounds and Boston DeVault had eight assists to lead the team.

Lenox was led in the points department by Rex Hoffman with 10 points. Samson Adams had 14 rebounds to lead the team.

Mount Ayr 57, Bedford 38

MOUNT AYR – Mount Ayr got ahead early and stayed ahead Friday night, wining 57-38 over Bedford (5-14) on Senior Night.

The Raiders led by eight through the first and then led by 16 at the half. Mount Ayr cruised to the win, improving to 14-4.

Leading in scoring was Frost, who scored 21 points. Payton Weehler had 13 points.

The Raiders won the turnover battle 16-7, and led in rebounds (27), assists (19) and steals (12).

Southeast Warren 61, East Union 58

LIBERTY CENTER – Southeast Warren (2-14) narrowly beat East Union (3-15) Friday night in a 61-58 final. The loss for the Eagles is their seventh straight.

Southeast Warren led the Eagles 30-25 at halftime and held the Eagles at bay, not letting them gain any significant ground on their lead for the final.
