Area boys basketball roundup: Murray stays hot, Frost ties record, Lenox gets back in the win column

Murray 59, Mormon Trail 38

GARDEN GROVE – Murray beat Mormon Trail (6-1) 59-38 Tuesday night, sending the Mustangs to 7-2 on the season.

The win for Murray came by way of a 21-point second quarter where the Mustangs took the lead and extended it by seven at 28-21 entering halftime.

Through the third quarter, Murray doubled its lead and hauled away with the game in the fourth quarter for the final.

Christian Nevarez was the leading scorer with 18 points for the Mustangs. Jace Rodecker had seven rebounds and seven points, while Colton Siefkas had seven points and six rebounds as well.

The Mustangs finished with 13 assists, six blocks and eight steals.

“We got off to a slow start, but it got going and we really played a good game,” said Murray head coach Darin Wookey. “Nevarez played really well tonight, ... he controlled the game extremely well. ... We have no idea who is going to score from one night to the next. Colton got in foul trouble and everyone stepped up in his place.”

Southwest Valley 39, Bedford 37

CORNING – Southwest Valley (3-5) got back on track Tuesday night, snapping a three-game losing skid with a 39-37 win over Bedford (3-6).

Leading the way in scoring for the Timberwolves was Blaine Venteicher, scoring 16 points with seven steals. Gabe Fuller had nine points, and Tucker Tepoel and Blake Thomas each had five points with seven rebounds.

“Close game with good defense from both sides,” said SWV head coach Kyle Bashor. “Blaine Venteicher came up big with four 3-pointers in the second half.”

No scoring breakdown was available at press time.

Lenox 54, Griswold 34

LENOX – Lenox (5-3) throttled Griswold (1-7) Monday night, winning in a blowout 54-34.

Lenox led by five through the first quarter and didn’t waver through the second quarter, taking a 12-point lead into the half. Lenox extended, and closed out the game for its first win of the new year.

Keaton England led in scoring for Lenox with 19 points. Chase Johnston scored 15 points with eight boards.

The Tigers had 32 rebounds, only six of which came from the offensive side. Lenox shot 44.6% from the floor in the win.

Mount Ayr 85, Seymour 53

SEYMOUR – Mount Ayr thumped Seymour Monday night, winning 85-53 over the Warriors.

The Warriors trailed by 11 after eight minutes and kept the game within that total entering halftime. Mount Ayr scored four times Seymour’s total in the third quarter (28-7) to close out the game, putting the fourth quarter on ice for the Raiders.

Jaixen Frost had a career night, tying the school record in points in a single game with 38. The record was previously held by Lance Brown, who set it in the ‘05-’06 season against Clarinda Academy. Frost had five assists and three steals also.

Payton Weehler and Erik Trujillo each scored 10 points. Leading in rebounds was Cody Larson, who had seven boards.

Lamoni 62, East Union 40

LAMONI – Lamoni (5-1) beat East Union (1-6) Monday night, downing the Eagles 62-40.

East Union trailed by 14 through the first quarter, leading to a 16-point deficit entering halftime. The Eagles came out of the gates hot in the third quarter, making up seven points while trailing, but a 21-8 fourth quarter put EU away.
