Bedford/Lenox finds fire after loss

Southwest Valley looks to get back to form after long layover

LENOX – Thursday evening at Lenox saw a total of 24 forfeits leding to Bedford/Lenox igniting in its second dual, and Southwest Valley’s group looking to get back on track after a team battle with COVID-19.

Bedford/Lenox split the evening 1-1, falling to Central Decatur 42-28 in the first dual and ending with a 50-21 win over Southwest Valley.

The Tigers benefited from five Central Decatur forfeits. Competing in six matches, Bedford/Lenox won two.

At 152, Dawson Stream pinned Odin Rivera at 5:08. Stream scored a reversal after Rivera earned two points from a reversal of his own. Stream was able to get back on top, scoring the pin. Jake Cox (170) was the other Bedford/Lenox wrestler to to score a win in a competed match, pinning Jesse Niebauer at 3:27.

Central Decatur took wins in competed matches at 132, 145, 160 and 195.

“We went into the wrestling room and had a little talk with them,” Bedford/Lenox coach Jared O’Riley said. “That was the difference I think. They came out with something to prove.”

Things quickly changed after the talk between duals. Bedford/Lenox won 5 of 7 competed matches against the Timberwolves.

“They came out good. That’s how I want to see them wrestle every match,” O’Riley said.

The Tigers won three matches by forfeit. Southwest Valley won two matches by forfeit.

Dawson Marshall started off the second dual with a 14-7 decision win over Southwest Valley’s Class 1A No. 10 220 Dalton Calkins. Marshall was able to score multiple takedowns and take a cradle for a near fall in the big win.

Bedford/Lenox scored 18 points from pins over the Timberwolves.

Mizael Gomez (106) pinned Ady Lundquist at 3:36, Keegan Smith (132) pinned Tate Haffner in 59 seconds and Cox pinned Bradlee Grantz at 1:51. Trenton Beck also scored a tech fall for the Tigers, taking down Evan Timmerman 19-3 in two periods.

“Trenton Beck, he did awesome in that match, tech falling (Timmerman) at the buzzer,” O’Riley said. “Dawson Marshall, (Calkins) pinned him before Christmas. He came out and had something to prove. I think they both proved their point.”

Southwest Valley picked up two wins in the dual. Kaden and Colin Jacobs ended the night with wins at 182 and 195, respectively.

Kaden Jacobs was able to win scrambles, leading to a 10-3 decision over Bedford/Lenox’s Jed Weaver. Colin Jacobs pinned Cael England at 3:50 in the second period to give the Timberwolves their final points of the night.

Against Central Decatur, the dual ended 30-30 with the Cardinals winning the tie breaker due to four match wins to Southwest Valley’s one win.

Kaden Jacobs was the lone win for the Timberwolves. He pinned Jesse Niebauer at 1:03 in the final match of the dual to tie things at 30.

With 2020 state qualifier Tallen Myers out due to a meniscus injury, Kaden Jacobs has stepped up for Southwest Valley throughout the year, helping the Timberwolves pick up much needed wins.

“He’s in a tough weight class where he has to keep grinding and everyone gets better, so he has to keep getting better along with them,” Southwest Valley head coach Cody Konecne said. “He really has done a pretty good job of coming in a getting us a bunch of wins.”

Konecne said Myers has a chance to return to action for the first time in his senior campaign next week, pending release from the doctors.

For Southwest Valley Thursday, the night showed the implications of an extended amount of time off, starting from a team-wide quarantine during the Pride of Iowa Championships Friday, Dec. 18.

“It was pretty significant. We were clicking pretty good, then we had quite a few guys actually test positive and it strung us along on some other ones,” Konecne said. “Then, we just quarantined everyone. Some kids missed well over two weeks.”

As the back end of the season kicks off, Konecne said he wants to see the group get their legs under them as matches will begin to go deeper with competition ramping up.

UP NEXT – Bedford/Lenox travels to Mid-Buchanan (Mo.) Saturday at 9 a.m. Southwest Valley travels to Atlantic for a tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
