Kelley on first team, two other Spartan men are all-region

CRESTON — Following a successful season that almost landed them in their first national tournament since 2018, the Southwestern mens basketball program finishes the current campaign out with three players on the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference’s all-region teams.

On the first team for the Spartans was James Kelley, on second team was Donzell Johnson, and on honorable mention was Nate Duckworth.

The Spartans finished 13-12 on the year, losing to Iowa Lakes in the Region XI Championship.

Kelley earns first team all-region status after posting a season in which he averaged 15.5 points per game, shot 69.8% from the charity stripe in an average of 23.7 minutes per game.

With him on the first team are Willie Guy and Ryan Schmitt of DMACC, Xzavier Jones of Iowa Lakes, DeWayne Vass of Iowa Western, Corvon Seales and Blake Brinkmeyer of Kirkwood and McKelary Robertson of NIACC.

Johnson on second team, Duckworth honorable mention

Johnson hit a team-best 57 3-pointers on the season, averaging 12.12 points per game, and is on the all-region second team. Johnson shot 68.6% at the free throw line and shot 42.8% from the field.

Duckworth was a 71.9% free throw shooter, shooting 44.9% from the field and averaging 12.2 points per game.
