Raiderettes clinch Pride of Iowa golf title

LEON — It wasn’t a competition individually at the girls Pride of Iowa conference meet as Mount Ayr sophomore Jaylee Schaffer won by 19 strokes.

The defending state runner-up scored a 70 for the conference title. She currently leads Class 1A in all golf metrics -— 9-hole low (36), 9-hole average (38.6), 18-hole low (70) and 18-hole average (79.25).

Carly Franey of Martensdale St-Marys took second with 89.

With Shaffer’s large lead, the Raiderettes were able to claim gold as a team, four points below the Blue Devils.

Mount Ayr scored 374 and Martesndale had 378.

Southwest Valley earned bronze, scoring 395.

They were led by Miaya Fourez who shot 92 for fifth place.

Sidney Crill placed eighth with 97 and Kenzie Fast rounded out Timberwolves medalists with an 11th-place finish, shooting a 100.

The East Union Eagles also had three medalists, led by bronze-medalist Gwen Nixon who shot a 90 — one stroke behind second place.

Three East Union golfers medaled at the POI meet. Gwen Nixon (third), Kathryn Lack (seventh) and Marlys Mitchell (12th).

Kathryn Lack shot a 95 for seventh and Marlys Mitchell shot 102 for 12th, the last medalist spot.

Nodaway Valley finished sixth with one medalists. Mallory Russell shot a 97 to land ninth.

Lenox placed seventh with Hadlee Christensen scoring a team-low of 102.

Team regionals will be held May 16. East Union, Diagonal, Lenox, Mount Ayr, Nodaway Valley and Southwest Valley will play at Lenox.
