Southwestern names new men’s assistant basketball coach

Southwestern Community College announced Shane Sweany as the college’s new assistant men’s basketball coach. Sweany, who will assist Spartan first-year head coach Reggie Kindle, will begin his duties in early August.

A 2020 graduate of the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg, Missouri, Sweany was a student-assistant at UCM, where he assisted the coaching staff with practice, team travel, meals and video work. He also helped organize UCM’s annual Elite Camp for potential student-athletes each August.

Sweany is excited about stepping into his assistant coaching role and being on the Southwestern campus. “I am very thankful to coach Kindle and Southwestern’s athletic administrators for giving me this opportunity; I can’t wait to get started,” says Sweany. “I am excited to work with coach Kindle and look forward to assisting him in achieving the goals he has set for this program.”

Most recently, at Doane University, Sweany began his coaching career while starting to work toward his master’s degree. As a graduate assistant, he was involved in all aspects of running a collegiate basketball program. Sweany looks to complete his master’s degree while coaching for the Spartans.

“I am extremely excited to have Shane join our program,” says Head Coach Reggie Kindle. “He’s a young, hungry, energetic guy that loves to be in the gym. He will do a great job building relationships with our players and people in the community of Creston. I can’t wait for our guys to meet him and be able to work with him.”
