Area girls basketball roundup: Nodaway Valley remains undefeated, Murray wins big

Nodaway Valley 69, Atlantic 51

ATLANTIC – Class 2A No. 6 Nodaway Valley (7-0) continued its hot start to the season, knocking off Atlantic (3-5) Saturday 69-51.

A tight ball game through the first half saw Nodaway Valley lead 31-25 at halftime. The Wolverines outscored Atlantic 38-26 in the second half.

Maddax DeVault scored 27 points with five rebounds. Lexi Shike and Lindsey Davis each scored 11 points. Shike also grabbed 17 rebounds for a double-double.

Murray 59, Moulton-Udell 33

MURRAY – Murray (5-3) picked up a 59-33 win over Moulton-Udell (3-5) behind a big second half Friday.

Leading 13-12 after the first quarter, the Lady Mustangs scored 20 points in the second quarter to go up big. In the second half, Murray outscored Moulton-Udell 26-13.

Jayda Chew and Kinzee Eggers each scored 14 points and combined for 11 rebounds.

Orient-Macksburg 33, Mormon Trail 22

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg (2-6) edged out a 33-22 win over Mormon Trail (3-3) Friday.

O-M went up 14-6, holding Mormon Trail scoreless in the second quarter. Both sides scored eight in the third quarter to keep the score at an eight-point game. O-M held on to the lead with an 11-8 fourth quarter.

Caitlyn Gist scored 11 points with 10 rebounds for a double-double. She went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Kinsey Eslinger and Draven Pierce each scored six points.

Moravia 38, East Union 33

MORAVIA – East Union (2-5) fell just short to Moravia (5-3) in a 38-33 finish Thursday.

The Eagles took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, extending the lead to 21-16 at halftime. Both sides scored 17 points in the second half.

Grace Nixon scored 11 points with eight rebounds. Sara Collins and Mallory Raney each grabbed eight rebounds.

Mount Ayr 60, Wayne 42

MOUNT AYR – Mount Ayr (6-1) won its third straight Pride of Iowa game Thursday, knocking off Wayne (7-3) 60-42.

The Raiderettes scored 36 points in the first half, going up 36-15. A 24-point second half kept Mount Ayr moving to the big win.

Maddie Stewart and Rachel Sobotka were double-digit scorers. Stewart finished with 16 points, and Sobotoka put up 15 points. Sobotka grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double.
