A former Creston man will spend at least 15 years in prison for his role that resulted in the death of his 4-week-old daughter.
Corbin Loudermilk, 26, of Atlantic, was charged April 2025 in Cass County with first degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death.
Loudermilk submitted a plea of guilty to child endangerment Feb. 27 as part of a plea agreement in which the murder charge was dismissed.
The plea agreement was accepted March 9 and Loudermilk was sentenced to serve an indeterminate time, not to exceed 50 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years. Loudermilk will receive time served for time previously served in connection with the case. He is also required to pay restitution of $150,000 to the heirs at law of the decedent.
According to charging documents, Loudermilk’s infant daughter became unresponsive Jan. 4 at a residence Loudermilk shared with the infant, the infant’s mother and his mother in Atlantic.
The infant’s mother told police she had fed the infant, who appeared normal to her, and laid her back down in the bassinet near Loudermilk, who was still asleep, and left the room. When she returned to the Loudermilk was standing in the middle of the room holding the now limp infant.
The infant was transported to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, due to the seriousness of her condition. Medical personnel determined the infant’s condition was critical due to severe head intracranial hemorrhages/edema and retinal hemorrhages. At 2:29 p.m. Jan. 6, the infant died from these injuries.
Doctors stated the injuries were consistent with abusive head trauma, most likely from an impact and possible shaking. The infant, according to doctor’s, would not have been able to eat or appear normal after the injuries occurred.
An autopsy performed by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny discovered numerous head and eye injuries. The examiner listed the infant’s cause of death as cerebrospinal trauma after natural and accidental causes were ruled out. It was determined the infant was in the care of Loudermilk when these fatal injuries occurred.
