Creston Police: Creston man charged with possession, said it was a birthday gift

Corey L. Mason, 48, of Creston, was taken into custody 2:25 a.m. Jan. 24, at the Union County Law Enforcement Center on the charges of OWI, first offense and possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, first offense.

According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 1:55 a.m. a traffic stop was initiated on a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado on Devoe Street for weaving, speed and having a license plate lamp out. Contact was made with the driver, identified as Mason, who had slurred speech, bloodshot, watery eyes and the odor of a consumed alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Mason admitted to drinking earlier in the night and said he would “blow over” if tested.

Mason was transported to the law enforcement center for testing due to weather conditions. He showed multiple clues of impairment on field sobriety tests and a PBT showed his BrAC to be above .08%. Mason provided a breath specimen for chemical testing, the result of which indicated his BAC to be .163%.

After being taken into custody, Mason was searched, and a case containing five marijuana joints was located in his sweatshirt pocket. Mason said they were given to him as a birthday gift by someone at the bar but would not say who.

Mason was transported to the Union County Jail where he was released from after posting $2,000 cash or surety bond.
