Ava N. Sales, 19, of Cedar Rapids, was taken into custody 11:30 a.m. Jan. 9 at the Union County Law Enforcement Center on a Union County warrant for the charge of OWI, first offense.
According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 11:28 p.m. Oct. 20, a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu was stopped at Lincoln and Orchard streets for traveling 39 mph in 25 mph zone. Contact was made with the driver, identified as Sales. The strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from the car. Sales said there was no marijuana in the car because they “smoked it all.” She admitted to smoking marijuana approximately one hour prior to being stopped and on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the highest she had ever been, she said she was at a four. Sales also had raised heat bumps on the back of her tongue and bloodshot, watery eyes.
She consented to field sobriety and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement testing and showed numerous validated clues and indicators of impairment. Sales later consented to provide a sample of her urine for chemical testing.
On Dec. 9, 2025, police received a toxicology report from the Iowa DCI Laboratory from the sample Sales provided. The report showed a confirmed presence of a metabolite of THC.
Sales was transported to the Union County Jail where she was released from after posting $1,000 cash or surety bond.
