Creston Police: Barred driver admits to having paraphernalia in car

James D. Michelson, 32, of Creston, was taken into custody 2:23 p.m. Dec. 5, in the 500 block of North Division Street on the charges of driving while barred - habitual offender and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 2:16 p.m. officers observed Michelson driving a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix on Division Street. Michelson was known to have a barred driver’s license. A traffic stop was conducted and he was confirmed to be the driver and his license status was confirmed to be barred.

During the stop, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Michelson was asked why the odor was present and he said he did not know but did tell officers he had methamphetamine paraphernalia in a backpack in the backseat of the car.

A probable cause search was conducted and officers located the paraphernalia which Michelson took responsibility for.

Michelson was transported to the Union County Jail where he was released from on his own recognizance on a promise to appear.

Caleb L. Bunner, 19, of Creston, was taken into custody 12:12 a.m. Dec. 6, at Division and Summit streets on the charge of public intoxication.

According to a Creston Police report, at approximately midnight a male, later identified as Bunner, was reported to have assaulted a family member and was now walking down Division Street. Officers located Bunner walking and made contact with him. Bunner was said to be acting aggressively and had fight-like behavior. Bunner did not listen to initial commands from officers but eventually allowed them to place him into custody.

A strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected coming from his person. He also was observed to be stumbling and slurring his words. He advised officers he had been drinking Jack Daniels whiskey. He consented to a PBT, with the result indicating a BrAC of .162%.

Bunner was transported to the Union County Jail where he was released from after appearing in court and pleading guilty to the charge.
