Creston Police: Passenger in truck faces drug, gun charges

Nathan L. Novotny, 20, of Creston, was taken into custody 2:56 p.m. Oct. 14, at Highway 34 and Birch Street on a Jasper County warrant for the charges of criminal mischief, fourth degree and burglary, first degree.

According to a Jasper County report, at approximately 12:51 a.m. Aug. 22, deputies responded to East 19th Street North for a burglary in progress. Witnesses stated Novotny had kicked in the door at a residence after being told to leave and the door being locked. Witnesses also stated Novotny had a firearm. Novotny left prior to the arrival of law enforcement but was identified by witnesses.

Damage was caused to the door, doorframe and siding of the residence when the door was kicked in.

Novotny was transported to Jasper County Jail and held on $21,000 cash or surety bond.

Jordan J. Spare, 28, of Afton, was taken into custody 8:48 p.m. Oct. 14, at Howard Street and Grand Avenue on the charges of possession of a controlled substance -methamphetamine, first offense; possession of drug paraphernalia and person ineligible to carry dangerous weapon.

According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 7:53 p.m. a 2005 Ford F150 was stopped for loud exhaust. Contact was made with the occupants, including a female passenger, identified as Spare. During the course of the traffic stop, Creston Police K-9 Olga was deployed for a free-air sniff around the truck. Olga gave a positive alert to the presence of the odor of narcotics.

A probable cause search of the truck was conducted. A small pouch was found in Spare’s purse that contained a small straw with a white powder residue inside and a Camel Snus tin with a testable amount of white powder. Both substances field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Also found in the purse was a loaded Kimber handgun.

Spare was transported to the Union County Jail where she was released from after posting $2,300 cash or surety bond.
