Accidents: Garbage truck accidentally performs PIT maneuver

No citations were issued in a two-vehicle accident Monday in Creston.

According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 12:32 p.m. a 2025 International garbage truck, driven by Thomas L. Christensen, 72, of Lenox, and a 2004 Jeep Liberty, driven by Tami J. Flowers, 64, of Creston, were both westbound on Highway 34. The garbage truck was traveling in the inside lane and the Jeep was in the outside lane.

The garbage truck merged into the outside lane, unaware the Jeep was in its blind spot, and the two vehicles made contact. The impact caused the Jeep to spin into the path of the garbage truck, similar to that of a PIT maneuver used by law enforcement.

Damage to the garbage truck was estimated at $1,500 and damage to the Jeep was estimated at $3,000.

No injuries were reported in a deer versus truck accident Monday in Union County.

According to a Union County Sheriff’s Office report, at approximately 7:37 p.m. a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by Mark G. Saylor, 58, of Creston, was westbound on Highway 34 when a deer traversing the roadway ran into the truck.

Damage to the truck was estimated at $5,000.

No injuries were reported in a one-vehicle rollover accident Monday in Union County.

According to a Union County Sheriff’s Office report, at approximately 10:12 p.m. a 2005 GMC Canyon, driven by Michael A. Fry, 66, of Kent, was traveling around a curve on 255th Street when the vehicle went off the road, through a fence and rolled.

A passerby located the vehicle with no driver. Fry later contacted law enforcement and stated he was driving the GMC at the time of the accident.

Due to multiple tire tracks at the scene, it is unknown which direction the GMC was initially traveling. Fry did not provide any information on the incident.

Damage to the GMC was estimated at $10,000 and damage to the fence was estimated at $700.
