Casey J. Johnston, 35, of Des Moines, was taken into custody 10:01 p.m. Oct. 6, in the 200 block of Southwest Sixth Street on the charges of domestic abuse assault and child endangerment with bodily injury.
According to Stuart Police reports, at approximately 9:10 p.m. police responded to the area after neighbors reported hearing a woman screaming and glass breaking. When officers arrived in the area they observed a male, identified as Johnston, outside of a residence, covered in blood and appearing to be out of breath and sweaty. He told officers he had just been in an altercation with a family member because he was trying to get his things from the residence and leave but was not being allowed to do so.
Police observed shattered glass from an exterior door on the east side of the residence. Johnston admitted to kicking in the glass because he was not being allowed to get his things and that was not right. He admitted to shoving the victim.
The victim told officers Johnston had pushed them earlier in the day but that after the incident everything was fine until Johnston showed back up at the residence attempting to get his things. The victim told officers it was late and they didn’t need to get the things now. At that point, Johnston began to force his way into the residence. The victim said they attempted to hold the door shut because they were scared of what Johnston might do to them once inside. Ultimately Johnston made his way inside the home and pushed the victim in the altercation.
The altercation took place in front of two juveniles. An adult at the residence said they had been pushed to the ground while holding an 11-month-old during the altercation.
Johnston was transported to the Adair County Jail after posting $5,300 cash or surety bond.
