Aaron J. Riepe, 45, of Afton and Lisa J. Squibbs, 37, of Des Moines, were taken into custody Sept. 10 at Highway 169 and Browning Street. Riepe was charged with OWI, third or subsequent offense; failure to affix drug stamp; controlled substance violation; possession of a controlled substance, third or subsequent offense; keeping premises or vehicle for controlled substance violation; possession of drug paraphernalia and a Department of Corrections warrant out of Polk County for the charge of violation of parole. Squibbs was charged with driving while suspended, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance - marijuana, first offense.
According to an Afton Police report, at approximately 9:11 p.m. a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche was stopped for an equipment violation. After the Avalanche stopped, a 2016 Dodge Journey also stopped behind it.
The driver of the Avalanche, identified as Riepe, was found to have an active arrest warrant. Deputies spoke with the driver of the Journey, identified as Squibbs, who stated she was following the Avalanche due to the truck not having proper lighting. It was then discovered Squibbs had a suspended driver’s license.
A police K-9 was requested at the stop and was deployed. The dog gave a positive alert to the odor of narcotics in both the Avalanche and the Journey.
A probable cause search of the Avalanche produced several packages of a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana and several items of drug paraphernalia. A total of 53 grams of marijuana was found in the Avalanche, packaged in several different containers.
A probable cause search of the Journey produced a burnt marijuana roach and THC vape pens.
Both Riepe and Squibbs admitted to smoking marijuana prior to driving the vehicles. They were transported to the Union County Law Enforcement Center where Squibbs consented to field sobriety testing. Riepe refused all testing. A search warrant for Riepe’s breath/urine/blood was applied for and granted but Riepe refused to comply with the court order.
Riepe and Squibbs were transported to the Union County Jail where Riepe is being held without bond and Squibbs was released from after posting $1,300 cash or surety bond.
