Colin D. Haynes, 22, of Auburn, Nebraska, was taken into custody 12:35 a.m. Aug. 3, on Southeast Sixth Street in Greenfield on the charge of theft, second degree.

According to a Greenfield Police report, at approximately 11:25 p.m. Aug. 2, a suspicious vehicle was reported driving through the Greenfield City Park. Witnesses at the park told officers a white Ford car, with a “student driver” sticker, no front bumper and no license plates had driven into the park and stopped. A male, later identified as Haynes, got out of the car, walked into the restroom facilities and then left the park.

Law enforcement located the vehicle in the Casey’s parking lot. A male was asleep in the front seat and a female was asleep in the backseat. Officer’s ran the VIN off of the vehicle and discovered it was reported as stolen from Lincoln, Nebraska.

Haynes refused to answer any questions but did say he was unaware that the car was stolen and that he got it from his “homegirl.” The female occupant said Haynes had picked her up in the Omaha, Nebraska, area a few days prior and that he had been involved in an accident there, which is why there was no bumper on the car. She also stated that Haynes has disposed of the license plates on the car during their travels, which she said were to lead them east toward Des Moines. She said she was unaware the vehicle was stolen.

Haynes was transported to the Adair County Jail and held on $5,000 cash or surety bond.
