DIAGONAL––A two-vehicle accident Wednesday in Ringgold County resulted in the death of both drivers and left one Afton man injured.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, at approximately 8:45 p.m. a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado driven by David Patrick Love, 54, of Mount Ayr, was southbound on 170th Avenue, approaching 110th Street, north of Diagonal. At the same time, a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Donna Kay Allen, 44, of Afton, was northbound at the same location.

Both trucks were traveling in or close to the center of the gravel road, not yielding half of the roadway. The drivers could not see the other coming as they topped a hill and collided with their left front corners striking. The impact forced Allen’s truck to bounce backward to the east road edge, where it came to rest. The other truck veered off of the roadway.

Initial reports stated a fire, a result of the collision, had engulfed one of the trucks. Both drivers died at the scene. Neither driver or Allen’s passenger, Shawn William Allen, 46, of Afton, were wearing a seatbelt. Shawn was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines by helicopter. The extent of his injuries are unknown.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Union County, responded to the accident.
