LETTER: Get back to emphasizing

Bill Magers

Recently there has been a lot of discussion over school vouchers. Some columnists have wrung their hands over tax money being diverted from public schools to private schools. There are people that say federal or state money should not go to private schools.

The government has no money of its own, the money they have is our money taken from us by taxes and then they decide how to spend it for us. The money we send them goes in part to fund public schools. If someone decides to send their child to a private school, some of the money they paid for that purpose should be able to follow that child to a private school.

If the public schools are losing students to private schools maybe they should ask themselves why this is happening.

One argument against vouchers is not every town has a private school. That’s true of a lot of resources and conveniences from town to town. Not every town has a grocery store, or some have one and others have multiple grocery stores. That’s where competition comes into play, it’s the same way with schools. Competition make us better. If one grocery store is losing customers to another store a good manager tries to figure out what the people want so he or she can better compete. People are sick and tired of not having a say in their children’s education.

Maybe the public schools should drop the “woke” and CRT and get back to emphasizing math and science and other subjects that are so important for us to meet the challenges in the world.
