LETTER: An America that works for everyone

To solve all of the problems we have in America, we need a strong Congressional Representative in Iowa House District 3 who is focused on working across the aisle to solve problems.

For two years in a row, Cindy Axne has been named the most bipartisan member of the Iowa delegation, and this year she was the 20th most bipartisan member of the 435-person House of Representatives. In keeping with that commitment, in September she sponsored, pushed through and voted for a law enforcement measure that passed 360-64, a bill that will primarily benefit rural law enforcement. It is awaiting consideration in the Senate.

TV commercials from Rep. Axne’s opponent criticize her vote that boosts the resources of the IRS. The Institute on Economic and Taxation Policies identifies an ongoing problem in America. Corporations and the rich haven’t been paying their fair share.

So, Democrats upped the resources of the IRS, part of a bill Rep. Axne voted for.

NPR notes, ”Some of that money will go to update decades-old computer systems at the IRS. And some is for improving customer service, including a taxpayer phone line where nine out of 10 calls go unanswered (because of staff shortages). Most of the money, though, is for stepped up enforcement– to help collect more of the estimated $600 billion in taxes that go unpaid every year, much of it owed by rich people who underreport their income.”

The stepped-up audits will not occur any more often for people making less than $400,000 annually than occur now. But, for the wealthiest among us, there will be additional audits that will require more auditors. They will not storm businesses with guns as has been suggested by Chuck Grassley. The rich will be expected to pay their fair share, as you and I do. Why do Republicans prefer the wealthiest among us not pay their fair share of taxes? Puzzling.

Cindy Axne is practical, hard-working and interested in an America that works for everyone, not just the wealthy. She visits us often. She is not hyper-partisan. She works for all of the people in Congressional District 3 and has since her first day in office. I will proudly cast my vote for this sensible Congresswoman, Cindy Axne.
