To updated the Creston community regarding the Creston Pyrotechnic Team, a.k.a. “The Shooters.” Yes, after taking a year off for the COVID situation, we are back to working on a 10,000 Crestonians 4th of July show. It has been quite an experience over the past year, as everything became complicated.
Our team members were basically “put out to pasture” and not allowed to do anything together in person. This resulted in several retiring and taking up other interests. Our fundraising went on the rocks over the course and that has resulted in a smaller budget — and higher prices — to deal with.
So our guys and gals — yes, we have female members too — are into a rebuilding situation. We need new volunteers and new funding.
Our volunteers are people who come from all walks of life and are all ages. We are primarily hobbyists who enjoy the creativity and doing things for our communities. We have members from all over southwest Iowa. The club operates under their own ATFE license to manufacture unique pyrotechnics for those members who like. Other members are more of the support nature who help set up and produce our show. We pride ourselves in having a special show, both on the ground as well as in the air, that is uncommon.
The Creston Shooters perform under the 10,000 Crestonians organization in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, who administers the funding by donations, which support the entire celebration as well as the Shooter’s training. Donations can be sent to the Creston Chamber of Commerce at P.O. Box 471, Creston, IA 50801, or dropped off to their office at 208 W. Taylor St.
But we need new volunteers to help this year. There will be a one-day, at no cost, training class taking place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 8 at SWCC, (room still yet to be determined), that will certify new members for legalities and insurance. Anyone 18 and older can sign up to learn about professional fireworks displays. Membership in the Creston Pyrotechnics Club is optional, but will fine-tune one’s capabilities. Further details on the room at SWCC to follow shortly.
We want to take this opportunity to thank those who have worked on our shows in the past, and invite anyone with an interest to sign up for the upcoming free training. For those who just like to follow the Shooters, you can find us on Facebook under Creston Shooters Pyrotechnic Association.
