Dorothy McNaught, 94, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Afton, died Jan. 12, 2026, at Atrium Health Pineville, in Charlotte. Celebration of Life Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Services will be livestreamed. The public is invited to share memories of Dorothy, share photos and speak if they desire. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Open visitation, with family receiving friends, will be 9-11 a.m., prior to service on Friday.

Dorothy Louise McNaught was born Nov. 15, 1931, to Fred William Kuhlman and Martha Margaret (Zuehlke) Kuhlman in Grand Island, Nebraska. She graduated from Grand Island High School. She went on to graduate from University of Nebraska – Lincoln in nursing, earning her RN and meeting her future husband, Clinton.
On April 19, 1952, Dorothy was united in marriage to Clinton Ward McNaught in Grand Island. They lived and worked on the family ranch in Dundy County, Nebraska. In 1966, they moved to Union County where they owned and operated a farm near Afton. Dorothy provided nursing care in the Winterset hospital from 1960s through the mid-1970s and worked with her husband traveling throughout the western states seismograph drilling in the late ’70s and into the ’80s. Dorothy was also a parish nurse through many churches.
Dorothy was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Creston, a board member of the Institute of Lutheran Theology in Brookings, South Dakota, along with being on the finance committee. She was very actively involved in her community with Gideon’s International Creston Camp, the Afton Development Committee, she was an Afton Congregate Meal advocate, an active member of the Republican Committee, on the Union County Compensation Board and a part of the Sunshine Society in the Afton area, being secretary and treasurer for many years. She was very creative, using her skills to sew and also make beautiful quilts for her family and friends. Dorothy loved driving her car everywhere and visiting people. She enjoyed many activities, like playing bingo and solitaire and watching the birds, squirrels and other animals. In Charlotte, she loved traveling, visiting the Smokey Mountains, Atlantic Ocean beaches, Blue Ridge Parkway, taking steam trains and visiting Washington D.C., and surrounding states.
Survivors include her two daughters, Susan (Jerry) Young of Afton and Amy McNaught of Charlotte; two sons, Ray (Helen) McNaught of Afton and John (Debra) McNaught of Alvo, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren: Lesley Gustafson of Canada, Cheryl (Juan) Moya of West Des Moines, Andrew (Natalie) McNaught of Clive, Elizabeth (Damien) Hosmann of Omaha, Nebraska, Anthony (Lan) McNaught of Houston, Texas, Sheila (Adam) Ross of Afton, Clint (Ashley) Young of Shannon City, Luke (Kalli) Young of Creston and Oliver (Briana) and Alexander Deng, both of Lincoln; step-grandchild, William Bowen (Meghan Adkisson) of Prescott; 14 great-grandchildren: Lauren, Mason, Connor, Victoria, Abigail, Teddy, Calvin, Madison, Kendra, Kaden, Karah, Audrey, Rebecca and Brady; three step-great-grandchildren: Reice, Anslee and Tyson; two great-great-grandsons, Karver and Kinnick; sister-in-law Barbara Kuhlman; several nieces and nephews and numerous extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Paul Kuhlman; nephew Scott Kuhlman and her husband Clinton in 2009.
