Born in 1941 in Iowa City, James was the second son of Frank and Mae Miller. After his mother’s passing, he was lovingly raised by his aunt and uncle, Isabelle and Bud Loudon in Creston. He attended local schools and worked for the U.S. Postal Service while in college. James married Linda Smith in 1960 and served in the U.S. Army with the 4th Cavalry, First Infantry Division from 1961–1965.
After his service, he returned to Iowa, earned an accounting degree from the University of Iowa and welcomed their first child, Lon. In 1968, he joined the National Labor Relations Board and chose a posting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he and Linda later welcomed their daughter, Angela.
The family settled in Richfield and were active members of the Church of the Assumption. Though James and Linda divorced in 1977, they continued to co-parent their children with care. James advanced steadily at the NLRB, retiring in 2001 as assistant regional director.
In 1981 he moved to Eden Prairie and became a founding member of Pax Christi Catholic Community. In 1987 he married Susan Masloski, and together they built a life of devotion, travel and service. James was a lifelong student of history, an enthusiastic traveler and a proud father and grandfather. His faith anchored his life and he served his parish in many roles.
James is survived by his wife Susan; his children, Lon and Angela and grandchildren, Payton and Avery.
His compassion and love will be remembered always.
