Katherine Mae Hamner was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Creston to Max O. Hamner and Mary M. (Miller). She was raised as a proud southsider, attending Franklin Elementary School with her siblings and graduating from Creston High School with the class of ‘42. Her free time was spent in the Rainbow Park neighborhood with family and friends and visiting her family’s furniture store uptown.

She was united in marriage to Harold Eagan, later divorced and then married to David Young. She raised three children: Judy, Mike and Becky. She considered that to be her greatest joy, saying she was always saddened when they were old enough to start school. Her joy grew exponentially as each grandchild, great-grandchild and even great-great-grandchild arrived, marveling she lived long enough to be so blessed. She worked at a variety of jobs and babysat for countless children both in Creston and Diagonal, all the while being a loving and dedicated homemaker and caregiver for her family.

In 2013 Katherine moved to Homestead Assisted Living. Getting involved in the welcome committee allowed her to form new friendships that would continue through the remainder of her life. Her final home was Clearview Home in Mount Ayr where she received wonderful care and looked forward to family visits and calls, especially a daily phone call from her dear friend, Carolyn Wheeler, who preceded her in death by a mere five days.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy Clem of McAllen, Texas, and Becky (Rick) Pettegrew of Creston; daughter-in-law Karen Walters of Creston; 10 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband David, son Mike Eagan; sons-in-law, Mike Clem and Jim McKinney; sister Maxine (Ray) Browning; two brothers, Russell “Buck” (Connie) Hamner and Max “Butch” “Pogo” (Dorothy) Hamner Jr.; brother-in-law John (Joy) Young and sister-in-law Carol Moore.
