Iris Smith, 96, of Creston, formerly of Afton, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, at her home in Creston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. Services will be livestreamed at a link under her obituary at powersfh.com. Father Patrick Amedeka will officiate the service. The burial will be in St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery in Afton. Open visitation with family receiving friends will be 9:30 – 11 a.m., prior to services at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston.

Iris Mae Smith, daughter of Lloyd Dell Shannon and Gladys Milree (Choate) Shannon, was born Sept. 10, 1929, in rural Adair County near Orient. She attended Arispe schools and graduated with the class of 1947.
On Jan. 15, 1948, Iris was united in marriage to Edmund Thomas Smith in Afton at St. Edward’s Catholic Church. They settled and farmed north of Afton for the next 41 years, where she was primarily an active farm wife and mother to her four children. From 1971 until 1985, Iris was a nurse’s aide at the Creston hospital. In 1989, they moved to Creston.
Iris was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Creston, Catholic Daughters, Sunshine Society, Afton Federated Garden Club and the Eagle’s Auxiliary. Survivors include her two daughters, Kristine (Raymond) Clark of Creston and Theresa (Steve) Snyder of Winterset; two sons, William Smith and Gary (Amanda Mountain) Smith, both of Afton; brother Dean (Carol) Shannon of Ojibwa, Wisconsin; sister Mary Drury of California; nine grandchildren: Nancy (Tyrone) Davis of Creston, April (Josh) Whetzell of Creston, Shannon (Jason) Doege of Buffalo Center, Lindsey (Lance) Millsap of Mason City, Wade Snyder of Melrose, Jennifer (Andy) Jackson of Lorimor, Jessica (Clinton) Haight of Elston, Samantha (Nick) Brown of Osceola and Shelby Smith (D.J. Vermeer) of Boise, Idaho; 19 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; five great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other family.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 66 years, Edmund in 2014; daughter-in-law Kathy Smith; siblings: Dortha (Martin) Radke, Dan (Alice) Shannon, Charles (Eva) Shannon, Don (Donna) Shannon and Eileen (Orlo) Everling; two brothers-in-law: Gerald and Mike (Pat) Smith and a sister-in-law Anna (Carl) Ford.
