Roy Victor Sellars was born Nov. 20, 1940, in Burton-on-Trent, England, to Victor Sellars and Elsie Mary (Edwards) Sellars. Roy attended community schools and was later trained at Derby College of Technology and Chesterfield College of Technology to be an engineer and metallurgist.
He began working on the floor of Rolls Royce as an engineer, later moving to the offices where he designed parts and procedures for the efficient use of the metals in the parts, particularly magnesium. He developed a procedure to deal with magnesium to make it less volatile, while still retaining the strength of the combination of metals.
On Feb. 4, 1961, Roy was united in marriage to Rosemary Poynton in Burton-on-Trent. From this union they were blessed with three children: Amanda, Jonathan and Angela. Together they lived throughout the world, including in Derby and Burton-on-Trent, England; Ontario, Canada, and several places in the U.S.
After moving to the United States, Roy went back to school and earned his Business Management Degree. He lived in St. Charles, Missouri, and Monett, Missouri, where he worked at various foundries teaching a specific process to use in their production, before moving to Creston in 1982, to include Wellman Dynamics, where he worked on government contracts of various kinds as an aerospace engineer.
This is also when he became a United States citizen. In 1996, they moved to Hunting Beach, California, working in another foundry prior to returning to Creston in 2013 following Roy’s retirement. Roy enjoyed model railroads, touring air and space museums and golfing. Most of all he enjoyed watching war documentaries, always eager to learn from history to apply it to the present, such that it would not be repeated.
Roy is survived by his daughters, Amanda Sellars of Pearl City, Hawaii, and Angela (Robert Hargin) Sellars of Greenfield; three grandchildren: David Phillip Mitten, Daniel Roy Mitten and Elizabeth Rose Sellars; two great-grandchildren, Jackson David Mitten and Roselyn Mitten; seven brothers: Colin (Jenny) Sellars of Burton-on-Trent, Brian (Pat) Sellars of Burton-on-Trent, Ian (Carole) Sellars of Stapenhill, England, Keith Sellars of Burton-on-Trent, Graham (Kathrine) Sellars of Winshill, England, Timothy (Mary) Sellars of Rolleston, England, and Barry (Anne) Sellars of Burton-on-Trent; three sisters: Pam Sellars of Stapenhill, Joy Sellars of Burton-on-Trent and Sue (Sellars) Eames of Swadlincote, England, and many other extended family and friends.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rosemary Sellars in 2019; son Jonathan Sellars in 2022 and brother-in-law Michael Eames in 2022 .
The Sellars family thanks the doctors and nurses of Greater Regional Health that helped Roy in his final days. He enjoyed the company of you all and was very grateful for all you did for him.
