Dan Metzger, 75, of Orient, died Monday, July 14, 2025, at his home in Orient. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield. Father Philip Bempong will officiate. The burial will be in the Orient Cemetery in Orient. Full military honors will be provided by Theodore J. Martens Creston V.F.W. Post # 1797. Open visitation will be 3-7 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. and a rosary beginning at 4:30 p.m., Monday, July 21, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield,

Daniel Jay Metzger was born Sept. 8, 1949, to Richard Daniel Metzger and Hilda Mary (Schaller) Metzger in West Bend. Dan grew up in West Bend and graduated from West Bend High School in 1968. Dan proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1969-1970.

On June 3, 1972, Dan was united in marriage to Sandra P. Johnson at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. They settled in the Orient area. Dan’s career began at Iowa Star Silos. He later was a janitor for Orient-Macksburg schools and he also owned and operated Metzger and Sons Backhoe and Trenching. He worked for Rolling Hills Farm Service for 25 years as a driver, mechanic and in maintenance until his retirement in 2012. During Dan’s retirement, he always stayed busy with odd jobs around the house.

Dan was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield.

Dan is survived by his wife Sandy Metzger of Orient; their children, Eric (Claires) Metzger of Orient and Mike (Rebecca) Metzger of Johnston; grandchildren: Alison (Jordan) Wyatt, Nathan Metzger and Savannah Metzger; brothers: Ron (Liz) Metzger of West Bend, Dean (Mary) Metzger of Huxley, Sam Metzger of Greenfield, Gary (Cindy) Metzger of Orient, David Metzger of Greenfield and Marlin (Karen) Metzger of Eagleville, Tennessee; sister Janice Osborne of Creston; many other family and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; daughter April Marie Metzger and sister Carol (Jerry) Gist.
