Angela M. Schmitz Avila

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Angela on June 8, 2025, at the age of 55, in Slidell, Louisiana, after suffering and succumbing to cancer. Angela will be cremated and interred at St. Edward Catholic Cemetery in Afton.

Angela is survived by her two beautiful children, daughter Sarah Avila of Afton and son Sean Spondre Schmitz of Des Moines; her granddaughter Emma Vandel of Afton; her father Terry Schmitz of San Diego, California; her siblings, Christopher Schmitz of Mankato, Minnesota, Theresa Lujano of San Diego and Christine LaCoste (Ray) of Slidell.

Angela was preceded in death by her mother Alice Schmitz; her sister Maryalice Schmitz; her nieces, Elizabeth (Minnie) Lujano and Christiana Herrera; her maternal grandparents, Margaret and Robert Hartman; her paternal grandparents, Lucille and Godfrey Pommier; her uncles: Gary Schmitz, Fr. Richard Pommier and Joseph Kuehn and her great friend Janice Hill.

Angela brought joy and laughter to those she met with her kind heart and sweet smile. She will be deeply missed. There will be a prayer rosary at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, followed by Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Edward Catholic Cemetery near Afton. A light lunch in the church basement will follow the service.
