After graduation he enlisted in the Air Force in August 1958. Due to his dad breaking his back, he came home from the Air Force to help with the farm. He completed his military at Camp Dodge in Des Moines.

Gerry met his soulmate Beverly Cummins in 1962. He came to Bev’s house as he was friends with her brother Ted. They were married Aug. 31, 1963, at the Methodist Church in Winterset. To this union a daughter, Lori Lynn, was born in 1964 and a son, Michael Dean, was born in 1967. They made their first home in Ralston, Nebraska, where Gerry was a diesel mechanic for Hicklin GM.

In the spring of 1968, they came back to Cromwell to start farming. Gerry worked the night shift at Hills Mechana, now Wellman’s, in Creston. On Thanksgiving day 1972, the family moved to a farm south of Lenox where they still reside. Along with farming, Gerry had various jobs which included working part time at Terra Chemicals and Dalton Ag. Gerry always kept things in working order polishing and cleaning various items and equipment. Every thing had a place and he wanted it there! He also had an wonderful memory for names and dates of things.

Gerry always looked forward to deer hunting every year with Mike and neighborhood friends. In later years, he liked to watch old westerns and Lawrence Welk on TV. He also enjoyed driving the mule around the farm to look at the wildlife. Gerry enjoyed reading, watching orioles when the apple trees were in bloom and playing rummy and Solitaire on a daily basis.
