Alan M. Stowell, 77, of Poinciana, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Alan Mark Stowell, age 77, of Poinciana, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on March 14, 1948, in Ord, Nebraska, to Howard Maynard Stowell and Phyllis Dunn, Alan lived a life rich in love, knowledge and devotion to family.

Alan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend—a respected member of his community whose warmth and wisdom touched many lives. He graduated from Creston High School before earning degrees from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa College of Law. His professional journey led him to the Bureau of National Affairs in Washington, D.C., where he spent over two decades and ultimately retired as editor-in-chief of its trade law publication.

After retiring, Alan pursued his lifelong passion for baseball as a historian and journalist for the Society for American Baseball Research. He authored numerous biographies and articles, enriching the world of baseball with his insights. His love for collecting stamps, coins and baseball memorabilia reflected his deep curiosity and appreciation for history. A fierce competitor in trivia challenges, Alan possessed boundless knowledge spanning astronomy, literature, history, law and, of course, baseball. Over the years, he visited 46 Major League ballparks, often sharing those experiences with cherished friends and family.

Above all, Alan was a family man. He loved his family deeply and gave of himself tirelessly, always present as a guiding force, devoted father and adoring grandfather. His legacy lives on through those he loved.

Alan is survived by his loving wife Patricia Soto Stowell; his children: Angela Stowell-Barnhart, her husband Brad Barnhart, Andrew Stowell, his wife Shannon Stowell and Alexis Stowell; his children by marriage: Fernando Valadez, his wife Marina Valazquez, Sandra Valadez, her husband Gustavo Hernandez and Lorena Valadez and her husband Martin Blasco and his grandchildren: Chandler (24), Reese (23), Devon (21), Aidan (19), Lucas (18), Elizabeth (18), Alexandria (17), Alan (15), Santiago (9), Marcelo (7), Alexander (5), Allison (2) and Amalia (2 weeks). He is also survived by his siblings: Joyce Carpenter, her husband Ken Carpenter, Janice Hining, her husband Art Hining and Duane Stowell.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews: Jason Dudley, Heather Hayes, her husband Tommy Hayes, Hope Gilkey, her husband Jack Gilkey, Heidi Wilczalkowski, her husband Steve Wiczalkowski, Gib Carpenter, his wife Pam Carpenter, Jessica Santiago, her husband Abraham Santiago, Sara Hazelwood, her husband Dwight Hazelwood, Drew Stowell, his wife Sami Stowell and Jennifer Stowell and her husband Neal Hartman.

Alan was preceded in death by his father Howard; his mother Phyllis; his sister Nancy Dudley and her husband Sam Dudley and his nephew Arthur Hining.

A celebration of life will be held in Vienna, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rise 2 Greatness Foundation (rise2greatness.org) an organization providing baseball camps, clinics, gear, scholarships, mental health, sports performance support, violence prevention and educational support to underserved children.

Alan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
