Stan Spencer, 86, of Des Moines, formerly of Afton, died Friday, April 8, 2022, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Emily Spencer, 80, of Des Moines, formerly of Afton, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, at Harmony Nursing Home in West Des Moines.

Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Pastor William Richardson will officiate. The burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Open memorial visitation with family receiving friends will be from 12–1:30 p.m. service time at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.

Stanford Squire “Stan” Spencer was born March 10, 1936, to Bryce Spencer and Freeda (Taylor) Spencer in Afton. He attended Afton Community Schools.

Emily Ann Spencer was born Dec. 15, 1943, to Clarence Broeker and Arlene (Wegner) Broeker in Creston. She graduated from East School High School in 1962.

On Dec. 13, 1965, Stan was united in marriage to Emily Ann (Broeker) in Omaha, Nebraska. They settled in Des Moines in 1967, where Stan owned and operated Esquire Motors and Emily worked for Look Magazine. She later worked for Massey Ferguson and eventually for DLL Financial, an agriculture credit company, where she retired from. In 1985, Stan and Emily purchased and began co-owning and operating Stan’s Place, which they operated for 33 years until 2018.

Stan was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and a NASCAR fan. He also enjoyed pool, especially when he won. Emily loved playing slow pitch softball in her younger years. She also participated in a bowling league in Ankeny and a pool league at Stan’s Place.

They are survived by a daughter, Lynn (Mike) Wheeler of Redding, California; grandson, Mickenzie (Kele Anne) Wheeler of Detroit, Michigan; sister-in-law, Gretchen Spencer of Des Moines; nephew, Bryce Spencer of Des Moines; niece, Renee Stewart and her two sons, Travis and Matthew, all of Des Moines.

They were preceded in death by their parents, Stan’s brother, R.B. Spencer and Emily’s sister, Alice Riekofski.
