John Houston, 77, of Creston, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, at Greater Regional Health.

John Houston, 77, of Creston, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, at Greater Regional Health. Celebration of Life Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Gideon Gallo will officiate. Open visitation with family to receive friends will be 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston.

Johnnie Dean Houston was born Dec. 9, 1946, to John Russell Houston and Evelyn Emma (Barger) Houston in Dallas Center. John attended Indianola Community Schools.

On June 17, 1967, John was united in marriage to Sandra Sue Galvin in Indianola. They settled in Indianola where John worked as a mechanic for the Massey Ferguson plant in Des Moines. They moved to Hartford and later Thayer in 1975, as he continued his work for Massey Ferguson. He later went to work for Smurfit-Stone Container where he started as a mechanic and became as a production supervisor until his retirement in June 2006.

On Aug. 9, 2007, John was united in marriage to Daisy O. Fernandez in Osceola, following the passing of Sandra in 2002. They settled in Creston. John was a member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ Church in Creston.

John is survived by his wife, Daisy Houston of Creston; his daughter, Dana R. (Clint) Church of Muscatine; son, John G. (Chanda) Houston of Surprise, Arizona; his stepson, Mark L. Fernandez of Des Moines; seven grandchildren: Shane Houston, Megan Church, Melody Church, Brade Church, Ashlynn Houston, Savannah Houston and Irelynn Houston and five sisters: Elsie (Allen) Bell of Colorado, Daisy Hakes of Baxter, Emma Weston of Colfax, Linda (Everett) Russell of Baxter and Mary (Dean) Lowe of Indianola.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sandra Houston; three sisters: Kathy Wright, Ethel Potter and Naomi Houston and three brothers: Oliver Houston, Nonie Houston and Russell Houston.
