Loretta Thompson, 78, of Afton, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston.

Loretta Thompson, 78, of Afton, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. A private family committal service will take place Dec. 28, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Loretta Faye Thompson, daughter of Harvey Lee Richardson and Verna Mae (Wasson) Richardson, was born Aug. 4, 1945, in Saline County, Morgan Township, Missouri. Loretta attended and graduated from Stover High School.

She met the love of her life, Robert Harvey Thompson, while working for his dad at the A&W in Waynesville, Missouri. On Dec. 19, 1963, Loretta was united in marriage to Robert in Stover, Morgan County, Missouri. They first lived in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, while Robert was serving his country in the United States Army. They later moved to Germany, returning in 1967. Loretta was a dedicated partner, mother and homemaker. During Robert’s military service, he and Loretta, along with their two children, made their home in various duty stations including Louisiana, Panama and Georgia.

In 1979, the family settled in Afton following Robert’s retirement from the military. It was then Loretta began working at Greater Regional Medical Center in the housekeeping department. In 2008, Loretta retired as the laundry and housekeeping supervisor.

Loretta enjoyed nature, fishing, hunting for morel mushrooms, caring for her fruit trees and growing her own garden. She also took on the task of canning her garden goods and creating new recipes.

She is survived by her children: Angela (Mark) Ruby of Greenfield and Michael (Melissa) Thompson of Winterset; five grandchildren: Samantha (Shawn) Whitaker, Daniella (Andrew) Noland, Savannah (Matt) Hydorn and Sean and Genevieve Shadow Thompson; four great-grandchildren: Ryder and Hayes Nolan and Bo and Maddox Hydorn; one brother, Loren Richardson of Independence, Missouri; five sisters: Judy (Junior) Abbot of Stover, Missouri, Dean Hummel of Blue Springs, Missouri, Barbara (Joe) Hagston of Cole Camp, Missouri, Patty Nerad of Cole Camp and Kenda Robertson of Orlando, Florida, and brother-in-law, Carl Fisher of Harrisonville, Missouri.

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Thompson in 2018; her sisters, Betty Lafever and Linda Fisher; her brothers, Wayne (Betty) Richardson and Ray Richardson; along with her sister-in-law, Dorothy Richardson.
