Richard Carney, 89, of Creston, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at Greater Regional Health in Creston. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 8, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Avenue, Creston. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Military Honors will be given by the United States Honor Guard and the Theodore J. Martens Creston VFW Post #1797.

Richard Lee Carney was born Jan. 1, 1934, the son of Thelma (Lamb) Carney and Percy Carney in Nevada. He graduated from Ames High School then studied at Georgia Tech and graduated from the University of Nebraska of Omaha.
On April 9, 1955, Dick was united in marriage to Eleanore “Ellie” Cooper in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After marrying, Dick and Ellie enjoyed traveling the world while he was enlisted in the Army, serving for 20 years. President Kennedy gave Dick a direct commission. In 1975, Dick retired from the Army and moved to Creston.
Dick worked at First Federal Savings Bank, First National Bank and Gits Manufacturing, while he, and especially Ellie, grew their Aladdin Travel business. Later, Dick enjoyed farming for Dale and Judy Eklund and transporting vehicles for Stalker Chevrolet.
Dick and Ellie made their home available to many kids over the years needing a place to stay. Dick was also an avid woodworker and artist. Dick enjoyed spending time with family, working puzzles and his favorite - fishing.
Dick is survived by two daughters: Terry Wallace and Stacy Van Hal, both of Creston; three grandchildren: Erin Wallace, Richard (Madison) Wallace and Mason Wagaman (Jami Graham), all of Creston; four great-grandchildren: Nate Bentley, Ryder Wallace, Octavia Wagaman and Eleanor Wallace and numerous other extended family.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, E.J. Van Nostrand; his wife, Ellie Carney in 2022; a daughter, Kathy Carney; a son-in-law, Joel Van Hal and two brothers, Jack and Dean (Norma) Carney.
