Wanda K. Johnston, 89, of Winterset, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Wanda Johnston, 89, of Winterset, passed away peacefully Aug. 29, 2023, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, surrounded by her loving family.

Wanda Kay was born Sept. 5, 1933, the daughter of Clyde and Mary Jane (Janes) Beard in Winterset. On Nov. 22, 1949, Wanda married Donald (Doc) Johnston in Creston. Together, they created a beautiful family and many cherished memories with their beloved children, Dick, Jim, Tom, Larry and Debbie.

She graduated from Winterset High School and was a dedicated homemaker. Wanda found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had an appreciation for flowers and gardening and delighted in baking and cooking for her loved ones.

Wanda’s legacy of love and devotion lives on through her children: Dick Johnston (Jane) of Creston, Jim Johnston (Jennie) of Guthrie Center, the late Tom Johnston (Roxanne), previously of Winterset, Larry Johnston (Kim) of Winterset and Debbie Breeding (Rick) of Winterset. She is also survived by her sister, RaeAnn Hitchcock of Winterset.

Wanda’s love extended to her 14 grandchildren: Sheli O’Neal, Lori Johnston-Herzberg, Angie Benshoof, Brad Johnston, Jason Johnston, Greg Breeding, Jennifer O’Neal, Jeff Johnston, Nick Johnston, Amanda Jackson, Ryan Breeding, Josh Johnston, Johnathan Johnston and Joey Johnston. Her legacy further blossomed through 43 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Mary Jane Beard; her loving husband, Doc; her son, Tom Johnston; her brothers, Forrest Beard and Jerry Beard; sisters, Dorothy Young, Jacki Wickett and Darlene Beard and her grandson, Klint Johnston.

As Wanda’s earthly journey has come to an end, her memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of her family.

Services will be private with burial in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for a future designation.
