Charles F Spare, 82, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at Menorah Hospital.
Charles was born Sept. 1, 1940, the son of Robert and Alta Spare in Creston. Charles attended Creston High School. He joined the army in 1957 and was with the 82nd Airborne, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany.
Upon returning home, he moved to Des Moines. He became an ironworker and attended classes at Drake University. Later, he opened a lounge in Urbandale called “The Glass Crutch.” During that time, he also became involved with horse racing and owned several race horses. He met his current wife at the race track in Omaha, Nebraska. They were together 45 years.
After moving to Overland Park, Kansas, Charles opened “Charlie’s Bait and Tackle.” He spent many years operating the store and fishing with his buddies.
When he retired, he found another passion, playing poker at the local casinos.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alta; his daughter Carla Richards and his granddaughter, Anna Richards.
Charles is survived by his wife, Debra Manfield and his grandson, Ryan Richards. He is also survived by his beloved fur babies, Walter and Truman.
There is to be a private celebration of his life.
