Sue Ann Freemyer

Celebration of Life services will be 1:30 p.m. Nov. 11, 2022, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the start of the service. Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Burial for Sue and Jerry will be in the South Lawn Cemetery, Seymour, following the celebration of life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family who desire to honor Sue, in some way, with the help of Southwestern Community College. Online condolences may be made at www.powersfh.com.

Sue Ann (Andrews) Freemyer was born July 19, 1934, to Homer and Thelma (Barrickman) Andrews in Allerton, Iowa. She was blessed with a younger and an older brother, Larry and Ted Andrews. God took her peacefully by the hand Oct. 28, at the age of 88.

Sue grew up on a farm in Allerton, attended school and graduated from Allerton High School in 1952. She went on to graduate from Iowa State University in Ames in 1955, with a BS in home economics, Go Cyclones.

Sue met the love of her life, Donald Jerry Freemyer, in Creston. They married on July 5, 1958, in Allerton. Three children were born to this union: Deanna Joy, Dawn Jill and David Jay. Sue has since been blessed with five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Sue loved and was proud of her family. She marveled over her grandchildren.

Sue began her career in Creston, as Union County Home Economist. She spent most of her working years as adult homemaking coordinator/community and family living coordinator at Southwestern Community College, Creston. Sue scheduled and provided non-tuition homemaking classes in rural, small and large communities for 21 years. The bridal show at SWCC was one of her favorite events. Sue Ann was a Wayne County crop share owner.

Sue has many achievements in her life. She was a MO Valley Achievement Award winner, member and officer of Iowa Association of Lifelong Learning, member of MO Valley AEA and presented the “Rookie of the Year Award,” for first year employees, by the state of Iowa, on behalf Southwestern Community College. She was a member of the Union County Beef Producers, Union County Swine Producers, organized five different record keeping classes for farmers and taught farm classes four nights a week in the local school district. Sue organized the annual observance of Agriculture Day for 12 years; stressing the importance of working as “partners in agriculture.” Her last two years at SWCC she was the ag coordinator as part of her job responsibilities. She worked in three counties promoting Women’s History Week. Sue had a passion for “lifelong learning.”

Sue Ann started the first urban 4-H Club in Creston and one of the first co-ed clubs in Iowa. She was awarded a 4-H Alumni Award, was an assistant 4-H leader, judged county fairs for 30 years, and when the “Make it Yourself with Wool” contest was discontinued in southwest Iowa, Sue worked with the national organization of sheep farmers to raise monies and held one at the Southwest Iowa ewe/lamb seminar. Sue was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America.

While in Creston, Sue was on Creston Board of Adjustments, member of the State Historical Society, Political Precinct Chairman and former member of the Farm Bureau.

Sue lived in Creston with her family until retirement when she and Jerry moved to Lebanon, Missouri.

Sue Ann loved shopping for antiques, attending auctions and flea markets with Jerry. She loved gardening, canning and freezing vegetables. For two years she had a spot on the local radio station promoting this to homemakers. Sue loved reading, growing plants and flowers. She and Jerry loved traveling, especially, in Mid and SW Missouri.

Survivors include: two daughters, Deanna (Johnny) Kepner-McLean, Chillicothe and Dawn Freemyer (Roger Umphres), Willard, Missouri; one son, David (Christine) Freemyer, Meadville, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Shirley Andrews, Allerton and Connie (Rex) Spainhower, Creston; five grandchildren: Keith Kepner, Casey (Andrea) Kepner, Katie (Rick) Kadlec, Jacob (Jessica) Freemyer and Kaylie Tucker; 12 great-grandchildren, Clayton Kepner, Connor Kepner, Allie Kepner, Crue Kepner, Avery Kepner, Cohen Kepner, Caroline Kadlec, Dallas Freemyer, Dakota Freemyer, Rose Greemyer, Gabriel Fogle and Kyler Fogle; great-great grandson, Beckham Kepner, and her fur baby and best friend, Abby, (chihuahua).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Thelma Andrews; parents-in-law, Eugene and Monola Freemyer; husband, Donald Jerry Freemyer in 2015; brothers, Ted and Larry Andrews; brothers-in-law, Gene and Bill Freemyer; sisters in-law, Mildred Andrews and Peggy Freemyer; nieces, Marla Andrews and Rebecca Freemyer and son in-law, Dennis Kepner.
