Karen (Ehm) Hanten, 50, of Des Moines, was born on May 13,1971, to George and Betty (Brown) Ehm in Creston, Iowa. Karen passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, at EveryStep Hospice Home in Creston.
She grew up on the family farm near Greenfield. Karen loved spending countless hours with the cats around the farm and helping in the garden. Karen enjoyed the creativity of sewing, as she designed and made her own prom dress. She graduated from Orient-Macksburg High School in 1989. She then earned her Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Karen was a Certified Public Accountant, and had worked for Wells Fargo of West Des Moines in recent years.
On June 8, 2002, Karen married Randy Hanten at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines. To this union two sons were born: Adam and Matthew. The couple divorced in 2019, but remained good friends. Karen was a devoted and loving mother. She attended hundreds of her sons’ baseball, football, and basketball games. She also enjoyed attending numerous marching and jazz band performances. Karen spent a lot of time and enjoyed cooking for her family. She would always have positive words of encouragement and a big smile. Many people were blessed as they met and got to know Karen.
Karen was proceeded in death by her parents.
Karen is survived by her two sons, Adam andMatthew Hanten of Clive; six siblings, Stephen Ehm of Greenfield, Paul Ehm ofGreenfield, Rose Riggs of Norwalk, John Ehm and wife Theresa of Oceanside, California, Mary Eason of Mt. Ayr, and Helen Ehm of Oskaloosa.

The family will greet friends on Friday,January 14th, at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield from 5:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday,January 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield withburial in the Greenfield Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the St. John’sCatholic Church.
