Dr. Pam Stangeland has been selected as the shared superintendent for the Nodaway Valley Community School District and CAM Community School District.
Creston boys earned their first dual victory of the season and the girls remained undefeated in varsity tennis action Monday against Southwest Valley. The Panther boys won 5-4 at home under challenging conditions. The No. 3 doubles team of Dylan Dornack and Carson Beer clinched the victory with an 8-4 win over J.P. Jones and Carter Giles.
A new deputy was sworn into the Union County Sheriff’s Office, though this one is a little hairier than most. Meet Patch, the county’s Crisis Response Canine. “A Crisis Response Canine is different from a therapy dog. Only a first responder can be a Crisis Response Canine handler. That first responder is trained in de-escalation, in peer support and in critical incident stress management,” Union County Sheriff Brian Bolton said.

The Southwestern Community College track and field team went up against some tough competition while holding its own at the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake University. The Spartans ended the meet with a bang, running a national-qualifying time in the 4x400 relay. Southwestern ran away with the win in heat one, running 3:17.85. Running on the relay for the Spartans were Anthony Simmons, Theo Piniau, Michael Flakes and Jaiden Brown.
The Creston FFA Chapter and Southwestern Community College Agriculture Department partnered together to plant 52 deciduous trees valued at $9,995 in Creston during the week of April 13. The trees were planted at SWCC, Southern Prairie YMCA, Bill Sears softball and VFW baseball complexes. In addition, 16 London Plane trees were planted along the SWCC entrance on West Townline to replace the trees lost during the 2012 tornado.
The Creston/O-M boys golf team posted a 29-stroke victory at Clarke Tuesday, while the Panther girls prevailed by 28 strokes in triangular action against both host Clarke and Winterset. Conditions were nearly perfect, with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s and little wind on the course at Osceola Golf and Country Club.

Spurred by individual titles, the Creston boys track team finished second at Tuesday’s Charger Relays in the 2A division. Panther distance runner Scott Vicker claimed the 3,200-meter and 1,600-meter titles with ease. It was Vicker’s first double-gold effort of the season. Sam Katzer garnered a victory at the 110 high hurdles, with a time of 15.87.
Creston School Board unanimously approved the 2005-06 budget during a special meeting Monday. District Business Manager Don Krings said the district’s tax rate will be $14.69 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The rate is less than a cent higher than last year. Including a fund balance of $2,094,741, the district’s budget for the year will be $18,055,451.
Monday’s Girls Panther Relays was saturated with Denison-Schleswig’s victories — and plenty of water, too. The Lady Monarchs won 12 of 19 events and scored 204 points in their second-straight Panther Relays victory. For the first time all season, the Creston girls team went an entire competition without a victory. The Panthers, who finished third overall in Class 2A, tallied five second-place and five third-place finishes.

Orient-Macksburg High School celebrated its 1995 prom “Running Down a Dream” Saturday with a grand march and photos at the O-M gym, dinner and dance at the Adel Country Club and after-prom games at the Gold Rush in Winterset.
In a hallway next to the Des Moines Marriott Hotel ballroom, Allen Smith and Greg Utterback shared a hug and a tear. Several long, hard months of training came to fruition for the two Creston men Monday. Smith, known as “Southside,” knocked out Charlie “Mad Mexican” Negret with 2:50 remaining in the eighth and final round to win the vacant Iowa Boxing Association’s super middleweight belt. Smith improved his record to 6-1-1 with the win.
Iowans who were extras in “The Bridges of Madison County” will have a chance to see themselves before anybody else in the world premiere of the movie that was filmed in Winterset last summer. About 35 Iowans were hired for speaking parts in the movie, another 150 Iowans had non-speaking roles.
