Creston boys track and field head coach Pat Schlapia said this year’s Panther team was going to be headlined by its throwers. That was certainly the case Tuesday night as shot put tosser Keagan Smith brought home Creston’s first gold medal of the season with a throw of 39 feet, 10 inches.

The Southwestern Community College unanimously voted to move forward with two building projects after a public hearing held during its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday. Two public hearings were held for public comment on the proposed science laboratory renovation and ag center addition projects, which are estimated to cost $2 million, collectively. Construction is scheduled to start May 15 and will be completed by the end of fall semester.

Creston/O-M golf picked up two wins Tuesday as both the boys and girls teams defended their home courses in triangulars against Winterset and Clarke. The boys contest came down to the wire as the Panthers separated themselves as top dog by one stroke, defeating Winterset 179 to 180.

Creston/Orient-Macksburg senior golfer Hunter Sickels will become the second Panther golfer in as many years to compete overseas when he travels to Australia this summer to participate in a Ryder Cup Tournament through Down Under Sports. The tournament takes place on the Gold Coast of Australia. He will be competing on the West Central Conference Team, which represents the Midwest region of the U.S.

On Saturday, March 15, eight Special Olympics athletes from the Creston Elementary/Middle School participated in basketball skills and cheerleading at the state competition. The cheerleading team received a second place finish for their performance. Members of the team include Tina-Sue Richards, Dallis Perkins, Makayla Burgmaier and Christina Newcomb.

McKinley Park will be glowing Saturday evening as 470 brightly colored runners and walkers are expected for the inaugural Hope Glows 5K run. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. It is First National Bank’s fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life and American Cancer Society.

After falling to Winterset by shootout in the opening round of the Winterset Tournament, the Creston soccer team rebounded, defeating state-ranked ADM in round two and Nodaway Valley in the third game, winning the round robin tournament by points in a tiebreaker system Saturday evening.

We have more exciting changes coming at the Creston News Advertiser. Within the next two weeks, we are going to have our new website up and running. It will have a new look and some new features. In addition to the local news you have been receiving, we will be bring back our weekly web poll. There have been some issues with getting it to load the past few weeks, so we just gave up on it knowing we would be getting a new website before too long.

Coming off season-opening losses to Perry in overtime and to seventh-ranked Dallas Center Grimes on Friday, the Creston boys soccer team rebounded to dominate Chariton 8-1 here Tuesday. Junior Joel Weis scored three goals in the first 48 minutes of the game to trigger a 4-1 advantage and coach Bob Irr’s bench provided much of the firepower in the second half as the Panthers extended their lead. All 27 Creston players got into the varsity contest. In fact, four of Creston’s goals and three of the team’s four assists were recorded by freshmen. That followed an impressive JV performance in a 4-0 victory that featured 25 shots on goal.

Senior Ryan McKim and his younger sister, freshman Katie McKim, both medaled Tuesday for Creston as the Panther boys beat Winterset and Clarke of Osceola (172-186-198) and the girls finished second behind Winterset and ahead of Clarke (224-233-241). “The McKim family brought home all the hardware yesterday,” Creston assistant coach Steve Shantz said. “It was our first meet at Crestmoor and that home course advantage really helped us out.”

The defeat of a moratorium on construction and expansion of a new animal facilities in Adair County is good news for farmers who want to live, work and have a successful future in their communities and Iowa. That was the Iowa Farm Bureau’s message following a 3-2 vote by the Adair County Board of Supervisors that will phase out a livestock moratorium established in 2002. Nearly 110 people filled the chambers of the Adair County Courthouse in Greenfield to witness the decision.
