Adams Street construction starts next week

Construction on the water main improvement project along Montgomery Street. Similar construction will take place starting next week on Adams Street.

If planning to visit Creston’s Uptown or one of many small businesses, prepare for potential delays and a parking shortage.

Adams Street, a well-traveled road on the south end of Uptown, will receive construction over the next five months as Creston Waterworks begins their work in the area on their water main improvement project.

While two-way traffic will still be possible on Adams, parking spaces might be unavailable in blocks under construction.

Construction will begin with a section between Pine and Walnut streets and head west with a new section about every two weeks, expected to end in late August on Sumner Avenue.

The project will work in conjunction with the planned sidewalk/linear park project, with the utility choosing to wait to pour concrete in order to save costs on both projects; the utility will save on the cost of concrete while the city saves on labor. Plans for the sidewalk/linear park project have not yet been approved by the city council.

Surfacing on the main projects from Pine to Division Street will be delayed during this process. Sidewalks will be left with gravel backfill until the sidewalk/linear park project is completed. Other sections will be surfaced by the utility.

Waterworks General Manager Steve Guthrie asked for patience as the waterworks continues the improvement project.

“We know it will cause issues, but this will be better for the community,” Guthrie said.

Fire hydrants along the length of Oak and Elm streets will be moved into the parking spaces on the north side of Adams. Each hydrant will be fenced off in a parking spot.
