5 years ago (2020)

Dozens of individual donors, businesses and community organizations donated money toward an effort spearheaded by students of Southwestern Community College’s criminal justice program, who sought to help young victims of trauma or children in difficult situations. More than 100 teddy bears were purchased, which feature a sheriff’s badge and the SWCC criminal justice program name. The bears will be distributed to law enforcement officers in Adair, Clarke, Union, Adams, Montgomery, Ringgold and Taylor counties and to the Iowa State Patrol.

Creston boys basketball rolled over Shenandoah, winning 71-37 for the Panthers’ second win in a row Tuesday night. Creston improves to 2-2. Shenandoah falls to 0-6 on the season.

Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling continued its fiery start to the season, scoring three wins at Glenwood to start off the final week before Christmas break. The Panthers took a 58-15 dual win over Council Bluffs, Abraham Lincoln and a dominant 63-9 dual win over Treynor. Taking on host Glenwood, the Panthers showed its dual dominance again, winning 64-12.

10 years ago (2015)

Tuesday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference double dual had the makings of a heavyweight prize fight, with second-ranked Creston/O-M and 10th-ranked Glenwood headlining the card. Glenwood opened the night with a 62-13 rout of Denison-Schleswig, before Creston/O-M shut out the Monarchs 73-0. Creston/O-M then rolled to a 48-19 victory over Glenwood, giving the Panthers their 27th straight Hawkeye 10 Conference dual win.

Taylor Briley said the Creston girls basketball team had something to prove Friday. “Today we wanted to come back and show that we are a good team,” Briley said Friday night. It was a significant turnaround here Friday, as the Panthers held previously 4-0 Atlantic to nine points in the first half in securing a 43-29 victory.

Thirteen Creston/O-M wrestlers placed in the top three — including six champions — as the Panthers rolled to the team championship of the Dan Christensen Invitational Friday night at Central Decatur High School. Only 126-pounder Carson Wheat, forced to injury default in the consolation round with a back injury, didn’t place in the top three for the dominant Panthers.

Northwest Missouri State University has announced the resignation of Michael Smith, the head coach of its women’s basketball program, effective immediately, due to personal reasons. Assistant Coach Buck Scheel, former women’s head coach at Southwestern Community College, becomes interim head coach. Smith was named the seventh head women’s basketball coach at Northwest in 2013 and led the Bearcats to a 20-43 mark during his tenure.

20 years ago (2005)

Vice President of Instruction Chris Duree resigned from Southwestern Community College Tuesday. He will be leaving effective the end of his contract June 30, after nine years at the college. In a letter to the board of directors, Duree said he intends to complete his doctoral degree at Iowa State University beginning fall 2006.

Creston’s varsity and JV boys basketball teams remained undefeated Friday in Shenandoah, both with stellar defensive efforts. The varsity squad survived a cold perimeter shooting night (2-of-14 on 3-pointers) and a patient Mustang attack to secure a 48-34 victory. The JV rolled to a 21-6 early lead en route to a 58-30 triumph, with 16 players seeing action.

The 13th-rated Murray Lady Mustangs held Lenox to single digits in each of the four quarters, as they claimed an 83-14 win. Lenox was outscored 39-8 in the first half and 44-6 in the second half. “We had very balanced scoring tonight, as the reserves saw a lot of action. I thought that our defensive intensity was very good,” Murray coach Jerry Shields said.

A 22-6 first quarter carried Nodaway Valley girls to a 66-47 victory over Mount Ayr Tuesday. Mallory Menefee scored 24 points for the Wolverines, now 4-0 in the conference and 6-1 overall. Jaclyn Westphal added 14 points and five assists. Sarah Geist scored 16 points and Kelsey Geist added 10 for Mount Ayr, which falls to 1-2 in the league and 3-4 overall. “We got off to a good start, which carried us the rest of the way,” said NV coach Shawn Wharton. “Obviously, this is the best we’ve played so far this year.”
